ima45dv8
Not only are they picky about the surface they're used on, but they sometimes cause the pointer to jump to parts of the screen you don't intend at odd, and unfortunate times. Twice in the last week mine jumped to the "Mark All Posts Read" link just as I was trying to click on something else. grrrr....
Scout454
I have 3 of them (Logitech). I use thin, Dell, slick mouse pads (my daughter uses her knee) and we have no problems. What brand?

LPatterson
This is funny as my Dell mouse just died also. Having trouble getting used to the new MicroSoft Comfort Touch mouse with the zoom window.

steel1212
Mine tends to do that, see under my avatar, I found out that my dogs hair gets stuck in the light area and that causes the pointer to bounce around.
JoshF
Toss it in the trash and get yourself a Laser mouse.... much much nicer. Mine isn't nearly as picky about surface

At least I'm learning that not all optical mice are created equal (or as equally junky as the one I have).

XRe
After a few days with it, I'm digging my new Logitech laser mouse! Thanks for all the recommendations. Since you noted it, maybe this isn't a rebuttal? I came home two days ago, and my wife was using her Logitech Nano MX while she was sitting on the floor of the living room, w/ the laptop in her lap... Her mouse pad? The fricking carpet!!! The only thing these mice don't seem to work on is clear glass when there's nothing under it (ie, my glass topped coffee table...).... Glad you found a rodent that works for you, Mark
George
Try the Kensington SI300 Laser Mouse. Smooth as glass, nothing better out there IMHO.

You gotta get around here a little more often, George! Actually, one thing had a little trouble with was finding one that wasn't wireless. For a desktop PC it doesn't make sense to keep burning up batteries. **I'm going to move this out of the Hate forum before one of my Jack-booted compatriots comes along and closes this. The SI300 is a god ole' fashioned one with a cable and USB plug, hard animal to find nowadays I'll be around a bit more :-)
