DHart
My hunch says go with Ed Brown or Wilson's top of the line, but I hear they may have been making some changes to the manufacture of their parts too, dang it.... not sure of this, though. What company is still providing a top-shelf, high quality, cast, single-sided thumb safety for the 1911? Searching for non-MIM hold outs!
HSMITH
The castings you are going to get from any other company aren't much better than the STI. MIM and castings are about the same quality when it comes to safeties. SV makes the safety you are looking for, billet machined and by far the best safety made. Matt Cheely
If you don't want to drop the coin on the SV's, I use Brown's and have never had a complaint with them.
DHart
Thanks guys. I really like the size and shape of the STI thumb safeties... but I've seen a few MIM thumb safeties snap like a pretzel... it sure is freaky to see a part you think of as STEEL, snap in two like that from relatively little force. Really makes me want to shy away from MIM. I know that many MIM parts have given good long service, but... I've heard the SV is great, but I'm not so sure I really want to spend that much money. Guess I'll go with Brown (which I think are either too wide or two thin) and reshape the thumb rest area, or live life on the "edge" and stick with the STI.... which is just right as far as size and feel goes... I just wish they were investment cast instead of MIM.
HSMITH
I have been down this road and broken every common brand of safety out there, the cast pieces aren't any better than decent MIM on my guns, they break regularly. The SV is the only one that holds up with the pressure I put on the lever when shooting. One SV is the same price as the second set of castings..... I encourage people to just spend the money the first time, spend it once and be done with it. Reliability and durability are not area's where I am willing to compromise. kgunz11
STI had a bad run of ambi safeties and replaced mine for free with what appears to be a much better one.
