Newbie looking for Shotgun-Need advice please

I've been out of the shooting sports for a while as I've been having a great time taking up archery. However, I have always wanted to try 3 Gun and the time is now.

I've always wanted an AR so I just purchased a JP Rifle CTR-02 with an 18" barrel. I've got and Eotech and Leupold VXII 4.5-14 x 50 LRT scope. I know I'll end up getting a different optic for 3 gun.

I also have a Glock 21 and I can shoot it well, but to be competitive with this will be difficult because of the recoil (I'm thinking about Tactical Scoped class).

So now to my question. Which shotgun to get? I have an 1100 that I could modify (used to be my only shotgun) but I am thinking about getting a Benelli M2 Field since this is what many seem to like after reading through this forum. It sounds like it may need some work done and many have suggested the Benny Hill is very good at this. I would like to limit my initial shotgun cost to around $1,500. I haven't checked the price on a new M2, but is this reasonable for my budget? Also, what modifications would you suggest for tactical class?

Many posts have suggested to just go out and shoot it, see what others are doing and then start to modify as I see fit and I think this makes good sense.

I appreciate any feedback. I have already posted a few questions and I have been overwhelmed by the generosity of many members of this forum. Thanks!

get the M2, and then a Nordic Components mag tube and go shoot. You will have 98-99% of what you need with those two items, an extended carrier release button would be the next thing I'd buy, along with having a rear sight put on the gun for slugs, but you can get by w/o the sight for awhile.

Shooting local, or hitting lots of big matches?

You have enough gun to play locally. Maybe add a tube extension on your 1100. Same with your G21...a couple of extended base pads and you aren't giving much up.

That will get your where you can tell what you like...and enjoy some matches...without having to drop a bunch of coin.

Thanks for the feedback. I think it does make sense to shoot what I've got for now and see how much I really get into this. I have a new three month-old at home, so it's going to be tough to get away to many of the big matches for a while.

I was looking at the Midway catalogue and I'll check Brownell's and other sponsors of this site for a tube extension as well as some other necessities to get started.

I think it will kind of cool to shoot my old 1100 again ( I got it for Christmas when I was 12 yrs. old-that was 28 years ago). Where does time go?

I've been reading a lot about the FN SLP with the 22" barrel and it sounds like this may be a good option too for tactical shotgun and save me a little cash and possibly some tuning issues that the Benelli M2 seems to have for some people.

I've got the FN and the 1100 and both serve me well regardless of what the other envious people will tell you about 1100's!! Go shoot what you have!!! Call DPMS and have them send you a tube for your 1100 and go shoot a bunch of local matchs, ask questions, and have fun. Once you get everything figured out go spend your money. After you do that you still won't be happy and will buy even more stuff!! But that is half the fun along with half the frustration. All kidding aside, go shoot and have fun, you will learn quickly what you like or don't like and it will help you down a fantastically fun road. Good luck with your travels!
