bbbean
What's your mag maintenance routine? How do you de-grit your mags if you drop then in sand or mud?
Rocket35
I clean my mags after each match and brush out the ones the hit the sand everytime possible. I havn't had any mag related issues. Currently shooting single stack so I use a nylon .45cal bore brush.
Aircooled6racer
Hello: If they drop in the sand they get cleaned right then with a nylon brush. If you are shooting a STI with double stack mags you can find all sorts of brushes at auto parts stores for cleaning mag wheels. I use the dash detail brush/mop for final cleaning. Harbour Freight have a brush kit with a bunch of brushes for about $5 that you can bend to fit 1911 mags. Hope this helps. Thanks, Eric
CenTX
It should work just as well for sand. At this years Open/L10 nationals we used 5 gallon buckets of water. After you dopped your mag in the mud you just stirred it around in the water bucket to get the mud out.
HSMITH
Mags should be disassembled and cleaned EVERY time they hit the ground, period. The Arredondo brush that Shooters Connection sells works great for S_I mags and other double stack mags, there are some special single stack brushes but I am not sure where to get them. Run your mags clean and dry, they will clean easily. If you ever feel the need to lube mags powdered graphite is the only suitable product IMO, they clean even easier when using it really. It is messy though.....
boz1911
If they hit the ground outdoors, they get cleaned. Before all matches they get washed and dryed thoroughly. Before indoor matches I use spray silicone on the mag spring, outdoor they stay dry. Mags cannot be clean enough.......
revchuck
I use Birchwood Casey "Barricade" (used to be called "Sheath"). It's a silicone treatment of some type suspended in a volatile solvent. The solvent does a decent job of getting cast bullet and powder residue out of the mag, and then evaporates away leaving the mag dry. If at a range, I disassemble any mag dropped in sand and dry brush it out. Production mags seem to be more tolerant of sand than Limited and Open ones. G-ManBart
For my S_I mags I use one of the Arredondo mag brushes to get the inside reaonsbly clean. I then use a rag and run that through the tube, wipe off the outside as well as the spring/follower and inside the basepad. They get cleaned every single time they hit the ground. It's part of why I like to keep a couple of big sticks and half a dozen short sticks loaded during every match. That way if I wind up shooting last on one stage and first on the next and don't have time to clean mags, I'm still good to go. Single stack mags I clean the same way, but use a much smaller single stack mag brush that I've had for over a decade...time for a new one! LPatterson
Clean 'em all before a match and never reuse one that has hit the ground. Plus they are all loaded before a match since I seem to get picked as the squad CRO a lot and time can get tight. Got a little tight last match as I only have 10 for the XD45 that is fairly new and I wanted to put some bullets through to break in.
uscbigdawg
Taken apart and brushed out with Ralph's brush. Dry rag pushed through. Wet rag pushed through and then lube the coils. ZERO mag issues. Oh..and don't fall in love with your springs. Cycle them things out every once in a while (I replace my mag springs every year). Rich
WDB
You're supposed to clean those things. I shake the sand out and wipe them off by hand and never had a mag related problem. 20K +. Now, of course, since I have said that,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
