rrflyer
Looking at buying my first set of electronic muffs. I've looked at the Peltor and the Radians. Reviews seem to be about equal on both and theyre in my price range. Any opinions on one vs the other? I'll probably be double plugging so I dont need the absolute Highest NRR rating. Im likeing the Tac6's because I've heard they're slim enough to use with a rifle as well as pistol. Edited September 29, 2008 by rrflyer
03k64
I've never tried the Peltors but I do own a set of Radians. They were great when I first got them but after a few months of use, they developed a crackling noise in both ears. New batteries made no difference. They now sit in my closet as my backups. Genghis
I love the Radians' electronics. They do the best job of any set I've owned, of cutting out the shot but leaving other sounds. I've owned other sets that cut everything out for a half-second or so. At some matches that might mean you don't hear anything for minutes at a time! Two drawbacks I've noticed. First, it seems that sweat will short out the electronics after a year or two. Second, the piece that joins the earpieces together (that goes over the top of your head) seems to be made of plastic. I bought one pair then broke that piece when I tried them on.
SLM
I'm thinking about ordering a pair of Howard Leight Impact Sport's to replace my Radian's. They've developed the crackling after a couple years. The Leight ones also look pretty slim.
ChrisStock
I have owned a set of the Radians for 9 months now, and the sound quality was nice. OTOH, the wrapping around the headpiece has come unglued and looks kind of ghetto no matter how I manipulate it. It can't be re-glued as it was from the factory without me disassembling them....hardly worth it. I just slapped some duct tape around the loose wrap and they function fine. The sound quality in the Radians is much better (when it worked), but the right side of the Leights stopped working after a few months. I think I just have bad luck with ear muffs. Coolduckboy
I'm thinking about ordering a pair of Howard Leight Impact Sport's to replace my Radian's. They've developed the crackling after a couple years. The Leight ones also look pretty slim. Those are what i have. They are slim and quite comfortable to wear. They also turn off after a few hours of use as like an automatic sensor thing so batteries don't run down. I have had the Peltors also but they corrodid after a couple months worth of matches because of how much i sweat which i was getting the "crackling" noise, after i got the Howard leight pair i never switched back. jfrey
I got a pair of the Radians and they work fine so far. I do have a question though. When you fire a shot it is muffled, but then you hear what I guess is the echo afterwards. Is this normal? It is a sound like tearing paper or shot hitting water. It is hard to describe. The first pair I got had the crackling noise in the left ear so I took them back to Academy where I bought them (same night) and got a second pair which work fine. Otherwise, I am very satisfied so far.
