skorittnig
Hi guys- Building an AR-15. So far: DPMS hi-rise upper Spike lower Timney trigger (3#) VTAC adjustable handguard with JP short range iron sight. Undecided on the stock, barrel, and bolt/bolt assembly. Any suggestions as to what I should do about these parts? Are titanium bolts/carriers worth the trouble of having to tune the gas system for certain loads? Or should I just go with a standard bolt/carrier? Is the difference in recoil noticeable- afterall, it is just a .223? What kind of barrel should I look at? I was thinking a DPMS medium weight stainless barrel (18-20"). Is there an advantage to 18 vs. 20"? I was thinking about an ace adjustable stock. Any help is greatly appreciated, but please try to provide a reason for your suggestion if at all possible. skorittnig
Derek45
Regular M16A1 stock is great, better than the newer A2, better length for most, and smoother, more rounded buttplate, slides up into your shoulder pocket real nice. actually the original 1964 era M16 stock, with out the storage compartment feels ever better. $10 at the gunshow
el pres
I use the JP A2 stock, perfect lenth for me and the nub on the bottom can be used as a place to put your left hand on the bench, not that that is terribly important. The ACE stocks are very nice but I dont like the foam, comfortable but too grippy.. As for parts, barrel, carrier, etc.. you cant go wrong with anything from JP. There is a huge difference in recoil and lock time with a lightened carrier "and" an adjustable gasblock. I run the Aluminum but it can be finicky if not maintained. However the JP lightened stainless is pretty close, again, they only work right with an adjustable block !! I dont know if you want that high rise upper as it limit the optic choices later on ?? fastshooter03
I like the Ace ARFX skeleton stock for the weight, price, and foam pad. Slightly shorter barrels like 18" vs 20" make it a little tiny bit easier to negotiate barracades and such. They can also make the rifle feel balanced better/handier depending on your weight distribution. I use YM NM chrome or Les Baer chrome carriers with either Dpms or Les Baer bolts. From what I've seen I prefer the Dpms bolts. The batch of Les Baer bolts I bought years ago had machining marks all over the boltface. You can definitely tell which brass is mine by the marks on the primer. Had some issues with poor extraction even though they have XP springs. Couple of times I couldn't get a fired case out of the chamber. After screwing around with it I just replaced the whole assembly with a standard Dpms or whatever and it pulled the case right out no problem. The TI carrier is cool if you can afford it. Don't know if it offers anything more than the weight you can take out of your buffer though. I'd sing a different song if they sent me a couple to try for about 20 years Nick
