Lumpy McSoo Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 Hello, The Sierra book lists loads from 3.2 grains (900 fps) to 4.6 grains (1100 fps). I need a load of about 1010+ fps to meet IDPA minimum PF for SSP out of a stock G-34. I was going to try 3.8 grs and 4.0 grs but I don't know if I'll be able to chronograph these before next match. Anyone do any load work with the new improved cleaner burning Red Dot since I have a bunch of it along with Montana Golds 124 CMJs? I loaded some at 3.8 grs and 1.150 COL and they shoot nice I just don't know if they make PF. I can't find much Red Dot data anywhere. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Lumpy.
Lumpy McSoo Posted September 23, 2008 Author Posted September 23, 2008 Well, I talked to Alliant today and they said to try starting out at 3.5 grs and if necessary up to 4.0 grs. This agrees with the old Sierra book I had which lists loads from 3.2 grs (900 fps) up to 4.6 grs (1100 fps). I really want to get these Montana Gold 124 CMJs moving at about 1100 fps for a Power Factor of 136k or so. I am going to load up a few 3.8 grs Red Dot and a few 4.0 grs Red Dot just to see where I am at if I can get time to work the chronograph sometime soon. If not I'll just probably go back to Tite Group for the upcoming match. What about Tite Group? I have seen various postings for G-34 barrels with 4.0 grs up to about 4.3 grs for Tite Group with 124s. Any suggestions to guarantee I'll meet minimum PF at IDPA nationals? I am going to try and chrono but if someone has a 135-140k PF I am sure that I would still be well over minimums. Any takers on Tite Group or any other recommended powders for 124 gr Montana Gold CMJs at ~1100 fps (136k PF)? Thanks, Lumpy.
DougCarden Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 (edited) Hi Lumpy, I would try the following with TG......4.2gr TG with an OAL of 1.120 if it will fit in your gun. That is a very accurate load with 125gr jhps, and should do well for you with the fmj. I dont have chrono info at hand, but if you are spending the money to go to Nats, chrono it! You dont want to ruin the match due to going sub minor....... Good luck with it. DougC Edited September 23, 2008 by DougCarden
Darrell Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 I'm loading 124 jhp montana golds with 5.6 grs of Power Pistol with Winchester primers mixed brass and an OAL of 1.100. Monday they shot from the bench rest at 25 yards out of my G17 into a 1.1" group for 5 shots. My EAA limited shot a group of .769" same load. I used to load out to 1.120 but my EAA has a short chamber and when I loaded them to 1.100 my accuracy actually improved. Used to be 1.25 in the G17, and .965 in the EAA. The power factor is 141 but I like the way the gun feels so I decided I'd load for accuracy instead of trying to meet lower power factor as there isn't a whole lot of difference in felt recoil to me. This load also shoots accurately in my XD and my 2 M&P's.
SRT Driver Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 Lumpy, I shot 4.2 of old Red Dot with a Berry 124 gr FP at 1.09OAL a few years ago. Chronoed 1097 av in a stock G34 bbl. And my notes says it was accurate. Good Luck!
