Anyone familier with Albany, GA?

Recommended Posts

I live 100+ miles north of Albany. There is a new gun club with USPSA and IDPA monthly matches 80 north of Albany ( near Columbus, GA ) and a club in Dothan, AL that runs good matches too. I don't know that there is anything else in proximity, except maybe around Tallahassee, FL. Get ready for heat, humidity and gnats.

There is a great monthly match (fourth Sunday) in Cool Springs, Georgia, which would be close (about and hour). Also there is a monthly match (first Sunday)in Shorter, Alabama, (near Montgomery) which would be doable (about two hours). The fine new range near Columbus has already been mentioned (about an hour and a half).

Two of these clubs have IDPA matches on Saturdays.

You can shoot every weekend.

Lots of shotgun shooting in middle Georgia just north of Albany plus access to some of the big shoots like the Wild Turkey Shot and Quail Unlimited. Cool Springs is one of the closer pistol clubs. FT Benning has opportunies, also.

Besides the USMC base, the area is kind of depressed. Do you have school age children - schools may be a challenge.

I live in middle GA but I spent about 10 years of my National Guard career in Albany and Americus. I used to stay in the USMC BOQ on Saturday nights.

First check out the Georgia IPSC web page. It has lots of information about the various clubs operating in GA. As you find the matches you prefer, the calendar on this site is handy for keeping up with the schedule. After that you might want to visit the Area 6 web site. Besides GA it also covers N. Florida (and more). I've been to most of them in GA and a few in AL, and they're all good.

Flew in there by accident once when Atlanta was rained out. Two scheduled flights a day as I remember (both to Atlanta), and probably less nowdays.

The TSA guy said the most excitement is very occasionally when one of the planes blows a tire.

We're planning on home-schooling, so no worries about local schools. The depressed economy does worry me a bit as a Defense contractor is mostly at the whim of whatever government is elected.

On the flip side, folks I've talked to there have been discussing land costs; $5k-$10 per acre, lower for larger and wooded lots. It almost seems made for a shooting facility, hunting, and training area. There's a hunting plantation there already, might be a partnership in the making.

While shooting every weekend would be fun, it'd probably get me shot when I got home... :)

Thanks! And feel free to keep me in your thoughts and prayers, phone interview is this morning. The folks I've talked to really like the company.
