what are people useing for hat cams ?

I quit using them. They ended up taking more time messing with them than they were worth. You end up adjusting them so much that they can take away from your shooting. I have a HoserCam that I don't even use and won't probably use again just sitting there.

yep, messing with cameras is distracting, also many "camera people" are pretty rude when they repeatedly delay the squad messing with them. The only way to film and not get distracted or delay the squad over and over is to have a non shooting camera operator.

I have a Samsung unit that is fixed to the brim of my hat. THe camera is clipped to the back of my belt. only needs to push a button to go. It also doubles as a handheld unit if you unplug the hat portion.

Cost was about $400 plus a hat and a small piece of plastic to make the mounting block.

Worls good for pistol, especially iron sights, not so good for rifle and shotgun since you tend to position your head differently, but sittl nice.

Biggest problem I have is actually finding enough time to watch the videos later!

The only time it's a problem is if the guy can't walk and chew gum. Mine has one button to push. It's mounted on my hat, which is alreay on my head, so I don't see what the delay would be???

It takes a lot less time than guys who repeatedly press-check slide jack and multi-sight.

I use the Helmet Hero ( http://www.goprocamera.com/ ) camera. I've found that it works best when I turn it on and leave it alone. It isn't hi-def by any means but it works fine. It helped me notice a couple of issues I had and didn't even know about...ooops letting out my training secrets.

This camera has SD card w/2 GB capability (~1hr) built in...it takes any SD memory which beats dealing with a seperate camera. The chicks dig it...ok that is something I tell myself to overcome the nerdy feeling when wearing it. Pharoh Bender...it looks good on you though.

It isn't the camera that makes me slow anyway. ;)

I'm probably going to get a archos 605 with the helmet cam. I think the cost is around 300 for both units. I shot with a guy that had one sat and he just takes some elastic and mounts it to the side of his shooting glasses. Works out pretty sweet. He has it mounted and all he has to do is push a button and its got time. I think the helmet cams are a lot less distracting than the hand held cameras, which is the main reason I want to get one.

I know a shooter who uses one of these:

http://shop.helmetcameracentral.com/HC-VIO-POV100-ULT.html

I think some of his vids are available for view on youtube. I will have to get back to you guys on that one.

I got that unit recently. It's pretty cool. My setup is pretty simple - 2 sided foam tape attaches to a hard clasp that grabs the camera head on the bill of the cap and the line feeds through the top of the cap, secured in between the adjustable velcro on the back of the cap, and down my back, through my belt, and the unit just slips into my back pocket. It works amazingly well, and there's really no fumbling around. When I'm up, I walk up to the thing, turn the camera on (takes maybe 10-15 seconds to get ready), and I'm ready to go.

Here's some clips of my videos on youtube. You'll notice the gun is not positioned straight in the middle but slightly to the left in the videos. That is because I'm a right handed shooter but left eye dominant!

Man that gun shoots flat... that load is major? M class shooter? Nice splits. Reloads need work, and you are very lucky they didn't DQ you for clearing a jam with you finger inside the guard. (Weak hand stage)

Range commands need some work though.

That load is 4.9gr N320 under 180gr MG JHP at Area8 (which chrono'd 166 there :surprise: ) and I subsequently bumped it up to 5.0gr.

I am currently a D class shooter. I have my moments and really try to work on my movement, but usually there's too many Ds and Mikes, coupled with brain farts and stages where I completely bomb (which coincidently are the classifiers) that's keeping me back.

I added to the above.... You shoot splits like a Master, but if the hits aren't there... Watch the finger when you are clearing those jams. :surprise:

I don't think you will be in D class for long. Even with all the stuff I saw there you look like an A shooter to me. Work on getting the reloads (keep the gun up too, you are dropping it down to far) I want to see that A card by the end of the year. ;)

I do well on stages where there's a lot of movement, b/c those targets are usually pretty close and I can get my hits quickly and identify misses for makeup shots. My major problem is shooting too fast for my own good on far targets. If I just spend half a second to align the sights properly I would get my hits, but I have a tendency to rush. Also, for example I remember at Area 7 this year, there was a stage with 4 swingers, and I got all my hits on those but had 2 mikes on wide open stationary targets due to the rush. Sigh.

And I quote:

"Give us a nod when you're ready"

"The shooter indicates that he's ready"

"Standby - Beep"

I've heard some 'modified' commands and 'obselete' commands used a lot. This one, however, really caught my attention.

Usually when you get a NO the shooter still has his hand on the gun. I leave mine there until I'm ready. If the RO gives me the RU ready when it's there I feel like nodding just to see if he'll start me with the hand on the gun. It's "my time" to clear my head and get ready... I get a little peeved when it's interrupted.

  • 1 month later...

This strikes me as an interesting training technique, but the prices I am seeing are rather off-putting. Out of curiosity, I decided to do an internet search to see what else was out there. Technology has gotten so good and prices so cheap that I figured there might be something out there that was "good enough" and alot cheaper.

One thing I kept running across was the Oregon Scientific Action Cam. Anyone ever hear of this or see one in use?

Yep I use a Samsung SC-X210L. Probably the easiest, no hassle hatcam on the market. With many more features to make it very versatile. I have been using it for quite sometime and haven't had any problems with it. And as far as holding up the squad.... I would have to agree with Jim that there are far more people wasting time messing with there other equipment than people and their hatcams. But that is just my observations. I just bolt mine onto my hat brim using a 7/16" bolt. Or you can mount it to a tripod and have a 3rd party video you also....Shown on a mini-pod for demonstration purposes, it does mount to a standard tripod as well.

Edited to add that my training videos on my YouTube page were videoed using this camera on a full sized tripod....
