Difference between a 1911 Series 70 and Series 80

The primary difference is that the Series 80 has a firing pin block/safety and the series 70 doesn't. The firing pin block is simply there in case you drop the gun and it makes it next to impossible for the gun to fire. Some manufacturers use them, some don't (like STI and Springfield) and there are two schools of thought as to whether they serve a useful purpose or not.

Personally, I think they're a waste, one more thing to break and make it harder to get a decent trigger pull. If you have the right firing pin and spring, the gun isn't going to fire if you drop it....unless maybe you drop it off a five-story building and it lands exactly on the hammer.

In addition to what's already been said, early Series 70 guns (from the 1970's more or less) were generally better made. If you're buying a new gun for a custom build, you definitely want to get the Series 70 reproduction or an original Series 70 gun.

If it is made by Colt or Para the series 80 firing pin block is deactivated when pulling the trigger, which can cause the trigger to be heavy because it has to move a couple of extra parts and push the block.

Kimber and Smith and Wesson use a firing pin block, but it is deactivated by depressing the grip safety and doesn't effect the trigger pull.
