Ignatz
If someone had a 8 3/8" 686 any they wanted to change it to a shorter stock configuration, is swaping out the barrel the only legal way? Or could you have it cut to the correct Smith dimentions? I saw a 5" 686 on Bud's website with 7 shots...Thats what got my wheels spinning....Thanks
JamesLovesJammie
Wow. I thought you were talking to me! I DO have a 8 3/8" 686 that I am looking to cut down to 5"...AND I got the idea from the 5" 686+ that is on gunbroker.com. As long as the barrel length and weight are matching to a factory barrel, it should be ok. Then all you've got to do is find an unfluted cylinder to match and you're all set! Carmoney
Straight from the rulebook: 6. A revolver must compete in the Open Division if it has one or more of the following modifications: A. Compensating, venting, or metering ports of any kind. B. An optical sight including telescopic and red dot sights. C. A rib sight, a front sight that extends beyond the muzzle, or a rear sight that extends beyond or behind a factory manufactured sight's location. D. Any barrel other than a factory barrel or a factory replacement barrel made by the revolver's manufacturer and included in the revolver manufacturer's spare parts catalog or list. Effective January 1, 2007, rule D is revised to: D. Any barrel other than an unaltered factory barrel or an unaltered factory replacement barrel made by the revolver’s manufacturer. Alterations to the barrel other than what is required to safely install the barrel are not permitted in Limited Division. I did check with the Jeff Nickelson of the ICORE rules folks to see if there was any "wiggle" room in rule D, I asked if my 5 inch 610 (cut down from a 6.5) with a Weigand front sight base was legal, his reply below, "If you are asking if this gun, under these circumstances meet the requirements for limited, the answer is no." There are 5 inch 686 barrels are out there, if ya really want one start hitting the for sale boards. Good luck.

Which is sorta silly, when you think about it--it's still a 5" barrel with the same profile. But I suppose you have to draw the line somewhere. This is one of the reason why we made the effort to get the rules in USPSA changed, so that arbitrary stuff like that wouldn't create a problem and turn people off. I figured I'd get it from "the horses mouth", the rule was pretty self explanatory though. Course the rule could be changed, I think it can be brought up at the IRC meeting. But after the last foray into rules "stuff" I'll just use another gun

(Unfortunately, it doesn't look like I'm going to make it to Morro Bay in '08, as I will be getting ready for a week-long jury trial that starts the Monday after.) 10mmdave
Are you shooting the IRC this year, Dave? Thinking about it but that's as much as I can do right now. This is the last year with Nelson as MD, and hell, I ain't getting any younger Went in 2000-something and loved it, great folks and a great place to be, even if it is Cali-funny. .....and I still have this 5 second penality nagging at my butt Finances will kill me again this year, along with the cost of components. Carmoney
Last year was my first time there, and I really enjoyed the experience. I've been pretty lucky in getting around to shoot as much I have the past few years, considering my hectic work schedule--this time it has caught up with me. Hate to leave things wide open for those shaved-legged west-coast pretty-boys with their personal trainers and expresso machines, though.... DanBagger That's the one Dan (how you doing by the way, what year was that ??) last stage of day, we're all tired, and I screw up for a 5 second penalty to lose A class by .63 seconds Oh well ! as Arnie says ...... I'll be back ! The match was great and the folks were great, met Dan there (Doug's distant cousin ) and a host of other's on our squad that were great folks but I can't remember their names. If you can go to the IRC then go, it's worth the money (if you have it) andyou won't meet a nicer bunch of folks !
