urnsrus
I have a Nowlin non-ramped barrel and at least once during each mag, I will get a failure to chamber load. It appears, that the JHP is "catching" and not chambering. Is this a common occurance? Should I consider going to a RN bullet? The accuracy of the JHP has always been much better, however, if it fails to chamber.....accuracy doesn't mean anything. David
HSMITH
Set your seating die with a round of factory ball ammo, it usually takes care of the feeding problems.
yoshidaex
Does the round chamber but fail to fully go into battery? What is your OAL set to? Edited January 19, 2008 by yoshidaex
boz1911
personally, like RN for 45's. When I started a couple of years ago with a single stack, I was told John Browning designed the gun for 230g RN, so I switched and voila! no feed issues. That's not to say other stuff doesn't work when properly set up, just telling you what worked for me.
urnsrus
Concerning OAL, I had originally set the JHP at the same as my RN @ 1.250......that didn't work too well. Now, based upon your suggestion, I loaded some RN @ 1.250 and then left the die setting at that and loaded some JHP. Now mind you, it is only 10 degree here today, so I am NOT going to the range However, I did throw some in the mag and cycled through manually very quickly. The JHP still failed to load. When I watched them, it appears to hit the end of the barrel and jam/stop and fail to battery at all. Now, using the few RN that I loaded, they seemed to battery just fine...... When I was using a ramped barrel, that didn't seem to be an issue, however, not it does. Any suggested solutions are greatly welcome. yoshidaex
how about a slightly shorter oal?
HSMITH
Use a round of factory ball ammo, usually they will be in the 1.230" area. By doing this you set the high points of the bullet as it is feeding to the same basic dimensions of a round nose bullet. Measure what the OAL comes out to be and adjust charges accordingly. urnsrus
Thank guys for the suggestions. I will try using some factory ammo and see if that works and will keep you posted.
DougCarden
Try OALs from 1.210 to 1.230. The shorter jhps need the shorter OAL due to the configuration of the nose of the bullet.
urnsrus
If I leave the die set at the OAL of RN @ 1.250, then the JHP comes in @ 1.970. Manually running them through my SS 1911 Caspian with the Nowlin non-ramped barrel. The RN seems to cycle fine, however, until I get to the range, AND it gets warmer that 15 degree, we shall see then. If anyone has any other ideas, I sure am open to them. HSMITH
Sounds about right. Back the charge down a bit and go shoot them.
