What's Up With Shok-buffs?

This thread was originally compiled by Erik Warren, then lost in the conversion:

Shock buffers, Shok-Buffs, Shoc-Buffs, there are as many ways to spell them as there are opinions on their effectiveness.

They work for some people in some guns and cause trouble with other people and other guns.

The original idea was to prevent the slide's recoil plug area from slamming into the frame. Some shooters think the pistol works fine as designed and will last many years with many thousands of slide-to-frame contacts, without the addition of a Twinkie part.

Some shooters use them to shorten the stroke of the slide, to make the gun cycling feel better to them and their style of shooting.

The shorter slide stroke is what causes malfunctions feeding and/or ejecting.

Shockbuff Jams: identical guns, different results

Brian's gun setup: Ghost Dog uses multiple buffers

Shoc-Buffs: more opinions

Shock-Buffs: They are the incarnation of evil and should be avoided like the plague!

can't use buffer: limited slide stroke
