eric nielsen
DMD You could shoot it in a SC barrel but the side-effects would be - early death for your extractor - [probably] horrible accuracy - [possibly] bad ignition: dud rounds - erosion of your barrel at the front of the chamber All that could be prevented by getting a 9x19 barrel & comp fitted to the gun. Hmmm, so the advice is..... just suck it up and shoot SC till I decide if I'm even going to stick with open, try other peoples guns when/where I can, then once I'm sure of what I really want, fork over the big bucks to have it built, and either sell this one to another newby, or keep it as a backup? HSMITH
If your open gun is fresh and tight it might be worth a new barrel and comp, figure $500ish for the parts and installation.
JFD
If I shot Open with a 9mm I could easily supply my needs with the once-fired brass I can find at the gun club. I'd feel safe with it since usually I can find the factory boxes in the trash that match up with the brass on the ground. That used to be the case with .40s until I actually bought a .
ChrisStock
So with a little effort 9mm brass cost is basically zero. I invariably take home a few hundred bright shiny new 9MM cases every trip to the range because some folks are just plumb lazy, and I don't mind picking up a few extra boxes every week. When I finally have enough to buy my 550B, I should have 10-15K 9MM to start with for free courtesy of my firing line neighbors.
