BASELINE PERFORMANCE

Piru 3 Gun Match - 12/17/06:

Functioning:

1100 Tactical - 100%

SVI40 - 100%

17" SS TSS - 100%

General:

Very cold in the morning. Shooters around burning tire thing. TB, CM, JB in attendance. Bakersfield crew here. BA tore shjt up. fjcker is getting good. need to watch him to see how he is kicking my ass.

Sustenance:

McGriddle sandwich. Hashbrown stick. Coffee.

drank apple juice on 2nd. stupid frozen water bottle still ice because so cold. need to bring 1/2 frozen bottles next time it is cold.

Got hungry on 4th stage. ate power bar type on 4th. Starting to tire 4th stage.

Tired at end of match. was not fired up throughout match. Need to exercise more to prepare for SMM3G. not pissing. did not drink enough. dehydrated? didn't think drank as much as normal due to the frozen bottles. should have eaten before got hungry.

Stage 1: 58% TB

Description: Shotgun only. Start low-ready?. First engage texas star. Then farther cluster of targets to the left and a closer cluster on the right. Then go straight down to a couple of walls and finish the rest of the targets. Stage utilized steel in front of steel.

Saw how TB shot in video of 3G Nationals. loads whenever he is moving. seems to time it perfectly and is ready shoot when he comes to a "position"

emphasized this stage moving slow/normal and loading small (3-4 rds) vs. loading big (6-8rds) and moving fast.

I. Shot texas star. Missed once. Loaded 3 while transitioning (very wide ~160 deg) and moving to right targets. hit three no problem. walked and loaded 3 while doing another wide transition to the left. hit 4 no miss.

Maybe should have shot:

START shoot all targets on the left (8/9 targets?). Load 3 while transitioning and walking to right targets. STOP Engage right targets. Load 6 while walking to next area. (2 STOPS)

-instead of-

START shoot 5. Load 3 and walk and transition right and STOP shot three. Walk/transition and load three and STOP and shoot four(?). Load 3/6 and walk to next position. (3 STOPS)

II. Load six. two targets wide transition from each other. then two more targets?

III. Load six? LOST MOMENTUM HERE. aggression gone. why? don't think I programed enough. was confused? left one steel up. was behind another steel. did not realize that it was back there. proof that I didn't take enough time to program/visualize the stage. also wasn't smooth in the transitions between the vision barriers. need to work on that.

did good with shots. Only missed once (except for target left unknowingly up). remembered emphasizing need to see front bead. but maybe why I lost the aggression? Had two shells left.

BE SURE TO TAKE THE TIME NEEDED TO PROGRAM THE STAGE.

Confusion... unsure... = less aggression.

Sureness = speed. More time you program and become sure of your actions the more aggressive/fast you will be.

Stage 2: 73% TB

Shotgun slug and bird. Pistol.

Stage 3: 56% TB

Shotgun slug and bird. Pistol.

Stage 4: 45% TB

Pistol. China Town. Field course.

6th place in terms of time. Speed a problem but not THE problem.

Went Hollywood. Had to reload from empty. Probably lost 2 seconds.

20 pts. in penalties.

Mike on paper. Engaged while running up to first window. Mike probably on second shot. Did not see. Mike on other paper. Don't remember where. Probably also on second shot.

THE SECOND SHOT IS THE BJTCH. CALL IT!

* Practice: Bill drills.

Stage 5: 66% AB

Long range rifle.

Stage 6: 40% TB

Short range rifle. Assault course.

Worst stage of the match % wise. Short range rifle is usually a strength. WTF happened?

4th place time wise. Did not utilize 40 or Beta. Use cinched 30's for practice in order to reload. Could probably have had better time if I had utilized 40/Beta. Speed not the problem.

50 pts in penalities... there's the problem.

One miss on head shot on berm. About 60'. Was told one of shots hit barrel. Don't remember holding off 2.5" at that range.

REMEMBER TO HOLD-OFF AT CLOSE RANGE FOR RIFLE.

2 misses and an FTE on an untouched target. Last stage of the day. Possibly tired and not taking the time to correctly program the stage. Same problem as stage one.

5th penalty was incorrectly given. Scorekeeper fault. Small match no biggie. Not following RO. RO did not call me over to view missed targets for review. Had mikes reversed at Area 2 when a squadmate had my back and corrected an RO call. Had mike reversed at 3G Nat in Reno when I noticed that there was a hit on a target (full bullet hole even) that was called as a mike.

BE SURE IN A BIG MATCH TO FOLLOW THE RO WHEN SCORING.

SHOTGUN

Ammo:

Fiocchi Game and Target (Turners) :

Orange shell. Inconsistent crimp. Some shells OK. Others have a flared case mouth --- like a pistol case that's been flared to accept the bullet. Snags on occasion with 1100 Tactical. Casings have slight ridges. Too slight. Slicker than other cases --- harder to handle. Not a good shell. Don't buy again unless really, really, reeaaaly cheap. RELEGATE TO PRACTICE ROUNDS.

Federal Field and Target (Walmart) 7 1/12, 3 Dram, 1 1/8 oz:

Crimp looks OK. Nice and rounded. Looked at 5. Doesn't snag like Fiocchi. Functions 1100 Tactical and 1100 RS. Nice pronounced ridges. Easier to handle. Shorter than Fiocchi. GOOD FOR BIG MATCH. Cheap enough @ wal mart for use as main practice round. Stock up.

Estate Super Sport Competiton Target Load (Cheaper than Dirt) 7.5, 2.75 DRAM, 1 1/8 shot:

Low levels of stock. Don't know if it drives 1100T. Works 1100RS. Crimp is rounded but not as severe as Federals. May not load as easilty as Federals. May not matter. Nice pronounced ridges. Check functioning with 1100T. Shoot side by side with Federals to see if .25 DRAM difference is noticeable.

Fiocchi Spreaders:

Checked crimp after POS Fiocchis. Checked 10. Good crimp. Unsure if they function 100% with 1100T. Seem to remember them not being 100% with 1100 RS. dirty gun?

Dry Practice: (Wednesdays)

1/3/07

need to have more structure in practice...

Load 3/4 while walking forward.

longer quicker steps... maybe not good.

short slow steps seem better.

angled gun to right with muzzle to left. doesn't really feel good. not smooth. find better angle next practice.

Load 1/2/3 while making wide transition. Start with gun shouldered about 15 degrees and swing to about 160 degrees and vice versa. During swing load 1-3 rounds.

LR felt akward. RL felt crazy smooth. totally awesome. why better RL? seeing DMW ramp more? I think it feels better RL because the left and right are meeting together. Right to left the loading hand is meeting the loading port. Doing the drill LR... the loading hand is CHASING the loading port. FOR TRANSITION LOADS FAVOR RIGHT TO LEFT TRANSITIONS WITH SHOTGUN.

Load small (3/4 shells) ... not moving. SNAP gun to target.

Inconsistent angle. not smooth. determine best angle and burn it in.

train to snap and IMMEDIATELY fire? did a couple of reps. natural POA not built up. all over the place. practice more to see if valid technique. was smacking the gun up after last shell with weak hand. maybe smacking not consistent enough? slow down to speed up?

Load large (6/8 shells) ... not moving. SNAP gun to target.

Need to flesh out the program...

From experience, the basic physical actions in action shooting are:

I. Presenting, drawing, and/or getting ahold of the gun initially

a. Draw from a holster/holder or present from a low ready or other position while static.

b. Draw from a holster/holder or present from a low ready or other position while moving.

c. Starting while not touching the gun. Gun in drawer, table, long gun leaning on wall, etc.

II. Reloading

a. Static reload.

i. Offhand.

ii. Prone.

iii. Sitting.

b. Moving reload

i. Forward

ii. Lateral Movement (Left or Right)

c. Transition reload (e.g. reloading while transitioning from target to target with little or no movement.)

d. Empty chamber reload.

III. Shooting

a. General (trigger pull, calling shot, tracking sights, etc.)

b. Transitions (narrow and wide)

c. Positions

d. Entry into positions or shooting area.

e. Shooting while moving.

f. Shooting moving targets.

IV. Grounding and changing firearms.

V. Malfunction Clearance.

Given the above framework what should be the frequency of practice for each skill for preparation for SMM3G?

a) target,

B) maintain,

c) rarely (due to time/$ constraints) or

d) ignore (Don't do at all.)?

RIFLE

I. Presenting, drawing, and/or getting ahold of the gun initially (Rifle)

a. Present from a low ready or other position while static. MAINTAIN

b. Present from a low ready or other position while moving. TARGET

Off hand 100 yard plates. Take 1-2 steps and SNAP the gun to target starting from high port arms.

c. Starting while not touching the gun. Gun in drawer, table, long gun leaning on wall, etc. IGNORE. A lot of starts were like this. At least three. But don't really see big gains to be had from current skill level.

II. Reloading (Rifle)

a. Static reload. RARELY.

b. Moving reload. RARELY.

c. Transition reload (e.g. reloading while transitioning from target to target with little or no movement.) RARELY.

d. Empty chamber reload. RARELY.

Use 40 or Beta. Didn't need to reload last year.

III. Shooting (Rifle)

a. General (trigger pull, calling shot, tracking sights, etc.). MAINTAIN.

Bench with elbow and monopod support. Just focus on hitting the targets.

Gun rested on top of chair kneeling. Small plates @ 300 yards. Just focus on hitting the targets.

Shoot with wind. Shoot when windy. Concentrate on 1) what the wind feels like on your bare arms and face, 2) see where the shot landed and note the behavior of the kicked up dirt, 3) adjust the shot. Follow through and note how much adjustment was needed relative to what you felt physically? How much adjustment was needed relative to what the kicked up dirt did?

b. Transitions (narrow and wide). TARGET.

Transitions on bench with elbow and monopod for support.

Gun rested on top of chair kneeling. Large plates @ 200 & 300 yards. Transitions. Don't just do sets with one range. Mix up ranges so you can practice the changing of the sight picture at the different ranges.

Off hand 100 yard plates. Wide transitions. Do aggressive Cooley transition. Do the Miculek transition. See which is better for you.

c. Positions. (Rifle)

i. Prone. RARE. No prone shots last year.

ii. Sitting. IGNORE. No sitting shots.

iii. Kneeling. IGNORE. No kneeling unsupported last year.

iv. Offhand. TARGET. Lots of shots.

Offhand. 200 yards large plates.

v. Barricade kneeling. TARGET. Good percentage of shots.

Gun rested on top of chair kneeling. Small plates @ 300 yards.

Gun rested on top of chair kneeling. Large plates @ 200 & 300 yards.

vi. Barricade standing. TARGET. Good percentage of shots. Wall stage.

Need to build prop or something. No means to do drills.

vii. Elbows over barricade/rest. MAINTAIN. 3 shots. Jeep stage.

Bench with elbow and monopod support. Just focus on hitting the targets.

d. Entry into positions or shooting area. MAINTAIN. Always important.

Off hand 100 yard plates. Take 1-2 steps and SNAP the gun to target starting from high port arms.

e. Shooting while moving. IGNORE. Pistol skills can carry over. Not optimal... but no live fire facilities to train SWM with long guns. Dry fire?

IV. Grounding and changing firearms. IGNORE. (Rifle)

SHOTGUN

I. Presenting, drawing, and/or getting ahold of the gun initially (Shotgun)

a. Present from a low ready or other position while static. TARGET high port arms. This is basically the same movement as presenting the gun after a shells have been inserted into the tube.

Off hand 25 yard plates. SNAP the gun to target starting from high port arms. Align front of barrel or FS with plate at start. Variation: Mimic loading a shell and then SNAP to target.

Off hand 25 yard plates. SNAP the gun to target starting from low ready.

b. Present from a low ready or other position while moving. TARGET high port arms. Same movement as getting into a shooting area. Kill two birds with one stone.

Off hand 25 yard plates. Take 1-2 steps and SNAP the gun to target starting from high port arms and from low ready. Can't do at Angeles. Do dryfire. Variation: Mimic loading a shell and then SNAP to target.

NOTE: Find out from a. which is faster: high port arms or low ready. Whichever is faster for you MAY be the favored gun position when entering a shooting area. If high low ready or high port arms is faster... hold the gun in low ready or high port arms when entering a shooting area and SNAP the gun in.

c. Starting while not touching the gun. Gun in drawer, table, long gun leaning on wall, etc. IGNORE.

II. Reloading (Shotgun)

a. Static reload. MAINTAIN.

b. Moving reload. TARGET.

Load small (3/4) while walking forward.

Load big (5/6/8) while walking forward.

c. Transition reload (e.g. reloading while transitioning from target to target with little or no movement.) TARGET. Target because new skill. Not really practiced prior.

Load 1/2/3 while making wide transition.

d. Empty chamber reload. MAINTAIN.

Shoot to empty. Put in shell from 2PAC and then hit release.

Shoot to empty. Put in shell from 2PAC and load from belt.

Shoot to empty. Load small (3/4). Smack bolt back. Load small (3/4).

Do static and moving versions of the above.

III. Shooting (Shotgun)

a. General (trigger pull, calling shot, tracking sights, etc.). MAINTAIN.

b. Transitions (narrow and wide). TARGET. Weakness.

c. Positions. IGNORE.

d. Entry into positions or shooting area. IGNORE.

e. Shooting while moving. IGNORE.

IV. Grounding and changing firearms. IGNORE. (Shotgun)

PISTOL

I. Presenting, drawing, and/or getting ahold of the gun initially (Pistol)

a. Draw from a holster/holder or present from a low ready or other position while static. MAINTAIN through dryfire.

b. Draw from a holster/holder or present from a low ready or other position while moving. TARGET.

c. Starting while not touching the gun. Gun in drawer, table, long gun leaning on wall, etc. IGNORE. Lots of starts like this. But not a big bang for buck in training for given current skill level.

II. Reloading (Pistol)

a. Static reload. RARE. Time and $.

b. Moving reload. MAINTAIN blast off reloads. Only reloaded once.

c. Transition reload (e.g. reloading while transitioning from target to target with little or no movement.) MAINTAIN.

d. Empty chamber reload. RARE.

III. Shooting (Pistol)

a. General (trigger pull, calling shot, tracking sights, etc.). TARGET. Training in this area with pistol tends to carry to the long guns.

b. Transitions (narrow and wide). MAINTAIN.

c. Positions. IGNORE. All offhand shots last year.

d. Entry into positions or shooting area. TARGET.

e. Shooting while moving. MAINTAIN.

IV. Grounding and changing firearms. IGNORE. (Pistol)

RIFLE

1/5/07 Live fire at Angeles

Refer to MOR entry same date. Shot rifle after MOR.

Equipment: 17"SS with Meopta. 3 short strokes. 1 with empty chamber (did not strip a round off of magazine. 2 previous shots good. not mag problem.), 2 with failure to feed. bolt 1/2 in. dirty gun? took out bolt and wiped off exterior. oiled four points and two holes. no problems after. Did not clean.

Bench with elbow and monopod support. Just focus on hitting targets.

15 rounds

Transitions on bench with elbow and monopod support.

Alternated from 200 to 300 to 200 to 300 yards... 60 rounds

Gun rested on top of chair kneeling. Small plates @ 300 yards.

30 rounds. Rear supported and unsupported with knee.

Gun rested on top of chair kneeling. Large plates @ 200 & 300 yards.

Rear unsupported with knee. Practiced transitions between targets. 30 rounds.

Offhand. 200 yards large plates.

Tired. poor hits ~20% hit rate. very last drill of the day. next time practice first. used approach method to get hits. also missed with approach method. :P 15 rounds.

Shoot with wind.

30 rounds.

Skinny plate at 300 yards was about 1.75 meopta dots. 1.75*3*2moa=~10.5". Wind was gusty. Shot at plate when really windy. Had to hold about 3 dots off to the right at one ocassion. 3*3*2=18". about full value wind. software says = ~15 MPH. Wind was pushing me. Wind pushing you means the wind is => 15MPH at full value.

Big round plate at 400 yards. top of meopta line on top of plate got consistent hits with no wind. consistent with software.

Got fed up with the cold and wind. Cut it short and did not shoot plates with pistol.

MOR

1/5/07 Live fire at Angeles

Equipment: Did not clean. .308 700 VLS with cheap Horus.

Arrived ~11:00. Left 1:45

Measured at 66 degrees with RXIII. Measured about an hour later and it was 59 degrees.

Very windy. Trees swaying. Dust and pebbles being kicked up by VERY gusty winds. hands were starting to get numb. car was being pushed driving to and from the range.

Using unmarked rounds. Didn't know what they were. Stop being a dumb ass. AS SOON AS YOU PACKAGE LOADED ROUNDS MARK THEM!

300 yard speed drill #1. Put 5 rounds into plate(s) as fast as possible.

Not timed. Other shooters on range. Lasered at 309 yards.

3 repetitions live fire. On bench with bipod. Unknown rounds. hitting @ .75 Horus. Should be @ 1.25. Hand at the rear of the buttstock felt akward and slow. Weakhand on handguard felt better and faster. Don't hold your hand against the bipod --- recoil smacks hand. place hand about 2" away.

400 yard small plates. Slow fire. Goal is to just hit the plates.

Lasered at 418 yards.

Unknown rounds. Hitting @ 1.5 Horus. Should be at around 2.25.

10 rounds total. At 16X recoil pushed the target out of the scope's view. Could not see where the shots missed --- hits visible by the rocking and swaying of the steel. Tried at 6X. Could see dirt hits. Was using 2.25. sighted target again at 2.25 and matched where the round hit the dirt. at 1.5. used 1.5 and got 100% hits on bigger targets. did not hit small pig. wind or elevation not fine enough.

afterwards just shot the plates at the 300 yard line. too windy. can't put up paper for other drills.

RIFLE

1/15/07 Life fire at Angeles. Short range session.

Arrived 2:30. Left about 4:15.

Cold again. Gusting winds. Guesstimating upwards to 15MPH+ --- being physically pushed by the wind at times. Took temp with RXIII. Says 68 degrees. Bullsh*t. Probably doesn't take into consideration wind chill factor or it is just a POS. Hands were cold. Normally doesn't do that at 68 degrees. People were bundled up wearing jackets. RO's wearing hooded parkas.

Close range plates laser at 90 yards. 8 Meopta dots wide. 2/100 * 90 * 8 = 14.4" => 15". Horizontal lines on Meopta look to be 4 dots wide => 8 MOA.

Equipment: Used 17" SS DPMS. SR sight was waaayy high at 90 yards. Needed to aim about 1/2 plate under the edge to get hits. Say 15" high at 90? Using mixed unlabelled reloads. Rifle choked on 5-6 rds. Rounds definitely at fault. Not gun. Left dirty.

DRILLS: Scope at 4X.

Off hand 90 yard plates. SNAP the gun to target starting from low ready.

30 rds. Took one shot from port arms. Pretty fast. Practice next time.

Off hand 90 yard plates. Transition from target to target.

60 rds. Mostly right to left. Meoptas closer eye relief making it dificult at 4X to do the transitions smoothly when compared to the TR21. Still felt good. Mixed up and did transitions with 2 and three plates at 90 yards. Widest transition about 45 degrees. 90% hit rate.

Off hand 90 yard plates. Controlled pairs. Starting on target.

30 rds. Did 1 or 2 plates at a time.

Overall felt that I was slower than previous outings with the TR21. Hopefully it was because of the cold. Snot coming out of nose, wind blowing me off the target and cold hands wasn't very conducive to a kick ass practice session.

Went through 120 rds like it was nothing. $3.70 x 6 = $22.20.

Incorporate dryfire and livefire session more to get better bang for buck. Bring timer next time. If the other shooters get recorded... whatever. Do cold livefire drill and record. Dryfire the drill a couple of times then do livefire. Repeat.

PISTOL

1/15/07 Life fire at Angeles.

Refer to rifle at 1/15/07.

Equipment: SVI40. Worked 100%. Felt the gun ker-chunk a coulple of times when going into battery. Spring felt kind of light. Breach face loose again? Left dirty.

First line of plates at Angles are at 35 yards (lasered). 2nd line is 50 yards. Farthest target is 50.

Plates. (Accuracy) ~4" round plate @ 35 yards

40 rds. Timing/pushing the gun noticeably caused a higher percentage of misses. Oftentimes when I found myself hitting the target it was when I wasn't pushing/timing the gun. Need to find happy medium in the need for speed (timing) and accuracy(not anticipating the recoil).

Plates. Low ready bill drill. 50 yd square steel.

24+ rds. Same thing. Pushing the gun caused misses. In the latter rounds was hitting more when I just concentrated on the trigger pull and the sight alignment.

Plates. Transitions. 35yd and 50 yd steel.

40 rds. Did several passes at 35 yd targets. Did one shot at 50, one at 35 and one at 50. Didn't do make-up shots. Concentrated on the speed of the transition. Next time do this drill and do one shot at each target and then transition back to the missed target(s). Do another set of runs but make up shot immediately after and not do the transition to the next target. See which averages faster.

Bring 22/45 next time.

MOR

1/13-14/07 Installed Badger bottom metal. $320+ for this thing? Feeds OK. Need to live fire.

====================

Practice 200-400 yards next Friday. Pistol plates. Maybe shotgun.
