Calamity Jane
Sorry about the flu...perhaps this will make you feel better. I shot Steely Speed VII over the weekend and missed steel. I did a "drive by" on the steel and had to go back and pick up 2. I had a 5 second run when it should have been a 4 sec run. It is frustrating! Just wanted you to know that I'm feeling the pain you experienced eariler with steel and barricades Hope you feel better today!

Shawn Knight
It has been a while. I figured it was time to make an entry again. I have been to every match I can get here. I made my way to Area 5 and saw what I thought was some of the best shooting I have ever seen. I also saw some of the worst. It is very surprising how a shooter can go from 4th on one stage to 33rd on another. 4th!! I was 4th on a stage at an Area Match!! Why worked? What made that one so different than the rest? I planned! I analyzed! I knew what I had to do! I really have to say I chose the hardest division because I wanted to make myself better! I feel awesome when I beat an Open shooter that is the same class as I am! I feel amazing when I tear a stage apart and leave others in my dust!. I also like to feel humbled when I see a Master or Grand Master make a stage their bitch! That makes me feel so good! I was MAD at some of those stages and I was MAD at the conditions! I have also come to understand what I need to do to make my practice time more effective and how I can become a better shooter. I need to start moving. Moving and shooting. that is my goal. I saw 2 GM shooters RUNNING and shooting. Amazing!! Not that I could get that good in a year or 5 but I have to say I want to do that! I have seen some amazing feats of skill and I want it more than ever! I have my reloading gear set up once again, I have my finances back in order, and I have my membership to the best gun club in all of Nebraska! I hope that my culinary escapades won't get in the way of my rebirth of shooting practice(see my Blog)! I have been starting to understand how much faster I can shoot a stage if just frickin' move! Here is what happens. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5417585126645465363 When I go too fast... This is what happens. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8231729813926826252 I almost slid into the door! I used to make fun of most of the people wearing cleats on this gravel but I now have a set. Adidas Corner Blitz. I got a good deal on them, 22$. I could not believe the difference!! It was like discovering some highly guarded secret that everyone knows!! What was I thinking??!?!?! How dare I chide the people who know?? Cuz I am stubborn! I guess it is time to get down to business!! Alright cums I up! Let's do this!!! LEEEEERROYYYY JENNNKKINSS!!!!! This is SPARTA!!!!! -Insert your own crazy battle cry here- Well that all said I have to say I have some work ahead of me. I will have lots of obstacles in my way and I can see how Flying Change will kick my ass if I never get out and practice. Shit I bet she could kick my ass right now!! Shawn Knight
So it has been a while. I needed to get some stuff off my chest. #1 I hate being away from the shooting sports for extended periods of time. #2 Even as little as 60 days away from your guns kill all of your skills. #3 Limited guys have it a lot better with 19+ rounds in the gun! #4 Open shooters have better than them with 28+ rounds in the gun!!! #5 A simple 8in steel plate can frustrate the crap out of you!! #6 I have reached the limit of my stock XD's trigger. It is hurting me more than helping me. I would love to have the unlimited resources most of the bigtime guys and gals have or at least their ammo budget. Reloading can only get me so far. I have a lot of good skills but the fact that my equipment is now holding me back has started to frustrate me. Before I came to Offutt AFB Nebraska I didn't have the time or the money to get all this cool stuff I am now getting. I now have a new CR Speed rig for my Production set-up. I now have better mag pouches and I will have a DOH soon too. I have a trigger kit for my XD on order and I will be getting that taken care of relatively soon. 3lbs with shorter reset and over travel is my goal. I think that will be a marked improvement over the nearly stock 5.5lbs with huge amounts of take up and reset. These XDs really fit my hand well and I shoot them well but it got a little scary there. I almost made a Glock switch!I had a G34 in my hand and nearly made the switch. A G35 might still be in my future depending on how the Frankenpara works out. The CR Speed holster scares the crap out of me!!! I can't see myself making a switch to LTD if I can't get over the speed of the Rescomp holster. It kind of scares me. if I make the teensiest mistake I will fling the gun across the range! I have been working on shooting on the move by getting the walk down. If I can keep speed up and upper body movement down then I should be able to get my shots on target. I am also having another strange problem. My eyes are not focusing on the sights at all. I have been making a conscious effort to see the sights but it is just not working. I has actually really started to hurt at times. I think my eyeglass prescription has either changed drastically or I just have the wrong one!. I am also going to try contact lenses too. I don't like the idea of poking myself in the eye every day but I gotta do some thing. I can't afford Lasik/PRK and I don't know if the USAF will give it to me for free either. Well I need to get off to bed now but I thought I would let those of you that care know how my shooting has been going. Oh yeah... One more thing... I nee one of those A-zone shaped Steel plates or at least on that has the A-C Zones on it. Some one send me one!! Please!! My birthday is coming up soon!!! Please oh Please!!!!???!?!! I love you guys and gals you are all beautiful!! I know... No I can't have your Bud Light! I know!!

Shawn Knight
Good to see that you're safely back in the US, TKOL! Why thanks!! I am now in possession of a new CR Speed rig for my XD. I expect my Springer trigger kit within the week and I will have a DOH attachment as well. I was hoping to get most of this gear before this weekends club match but I can't say those parts will make a difference but I am certain I have reached the limit of my gear. I have been practicing with the new CR Speed pouches and rig. They are much faster than my old Blade-Tech gear. The mags are in a much better position and my hand gets on them much easier. I don't fight the gear anymore, which is good. I need to find my 9mm dummy rounds so I keep from chewing up my magwell like someone else's polymer pistol. Anyway... Does anyone else have better reloads in the dark or with your eyes closed? Could my eyes be screwing up my muscle memory?
Calamity Jane
Great to see you posting in your diary again! You don't need unlimited resources and ammo. All you need is a gun that works. You're not going to throw your gun down range with your new holster. CR speed holsters rock and you will rock with it. Go get your eyes checked and you'll be fine. A paper target works just as well as a steel one. Whew....that was a lot of negative talking I had to re-do for ya. What you think is what you will become. I look forward to seeing some positive things out of you this season. Best of luck!! Jane
Shawn Knight
Well dang it to heck Jane!!! You just took all my excuses away!! I am getting in much better shape so I am taking that excuse away. I have lots of new home gym equipment and I am really starting to feel better and stronger. To that guy that knows what this means... MSFU!
Shawn Knight
So I shot my first match in 2 months... I did very well winning one stage and very poorly screwing the other 3... Here I am posing with one of my best screw-ups!!! I shot once hit the white and made to quick follow up shots and both appeared in the white just below the top hole. Then something happened. I got really angry. Like Hulk angry! I somehow found the strength to focus and make 2 more quick shots that hit within an inch of each other in the brown. Look hard you can see them! They were faster than the other three shots that hit the white too!. Don't quite know what happened but I do know that at least one more no-shoot and a mike on that stage made it the worst of the day. I also had one of the best stages of my day today. I won the first stage I shot which kind of surprised me. I have a really crappy cell phone video of it and I might try to post it later. I did a lot of stuff wrong but apparently I did more right then the rest of the shooters. I analyzed the stage well IMHO and I went through with my plan. I shot on the move and used the 10-11 rounds in my gun with fewer reloads. I did the same thing on Stage 3 but I had less luck with the reloading and my plan kind of fell apart. It wasn't as bad as I make it out in my head because I was still able to get everything done. I did have one mike on a head shot but I am pretty sure that is due to just not paying attention rather than screwing my plan up. We also shot a classifier today and I have to say... I hate weak hand shooting. It makes me feel useless as a shooter. I hate it with all my heart!!! DEATH TO WEAK HAND SHOOTING!!!!! Please return to your regularly scheduled threads! Shawn Knight
Oh yeah... I got my Springer Precision Trigger kit for my XD and WOW!! It really made a difference. It is still a little heavy but I think 4.5lbs is pretty darned good for nearly drop in parts. The take up is practically non-existent, the over travel is just right, and the break it just crisp enough to make me forget how to shoot the thing!!! Shawn Knight
I have this thing I do. I go out to the range and I put bullets in the targets. Some people call it shooting, some people call it training, and others call it plinking. I call it fun. How many of you have really gone to the range to have fun lately? Seriously? I mean I did some reloads and I did a few drills and some shooting on the move stuff but other than that I had serious fun! I got to shoot at my nemesis again. It was still pretty hard but I think I had what I did wrong down. I also got my shorter XD front sight. It made a significant difference. I tried some more weak hand stuff and I am finding out that it is freakin hard!!! My hits are 10-12 inches to the right when I shoot weak hand. If I stick my finger all the way into the trigger guard I can get hits to about 2in right on POA. Much better. I will kep that in mind when I shoot weak hand again. I have also noticed that I need to stop worrying about getting hits and focus on getting the sights where they need to be. I am continuously looking at my hits. The stage I won in last weeks match made me understand that I didn't look at the targets at all for hits. I just knew where they were and that I should shoot them. I need to work on stage analysis more. That is the key. Knowing where all the targets are makes them easier to find quickly.
Loves2Shoot
I don't know if this will help, but some people can't the gun too much and it makes the second shot harder. I've found that holding it up straighter (see my post on the XDTalk site about IDPA slow or fast) makes the follow up shot easier strong and weak hand. PS. The sights tell you where the bullets are going if you are paying attention Edited March 10, 2008 by Loves2Shoot

I also saw that fact that my weak arm has really bad tennis elbow too. Doesn't help. I did a lot of searching here and I have some different arm bands. I did notice when i was practicing that when I put my finger all the way through the trigger guard that the gun had much less cant to it. PS. The sights tell you where the bullets are going if you are paying attention Yeah I did notice that.
Shawn Knight
What is happening when you have an off day? What is really off? I mean I went to our local steel match and I posted the second fastest time out of 27 shooters on a stage similar to "5 to go". Basic stage was 4 8in plates set a 12 yards. These plates were about 1.5 yards apart and they varied from 3ft high to 4 ft high. The stop plate was a 5in plate set about 5 yards to the right of the right most plate. I practically cleaned this stage. i did so well that I was 2nd out of 27 shooters including all of the Open shooters. our best open shooter did the same 4 runs in 16.98 First place was 15.37 and they were mostly open shooters. Is it the gun? Is it something more? Did I actually look at my sights and truly understand what I saw happening? I think so. I really do think I knew where those sights were in reference to the targets the entire time. The best part was that I really thought I was moving very very slowly. I thought it was crappy and I knew I was not doing well. Then... Then... It turns out to be the second best time on that stage of the day!!!! We also have a field style course in our steel matches which I am not too happy about but hey not every thing can be "My way". No matter how much I want it to be. I did so so on this one.posting a 39.63 and having a malfunction(ammo). I can't understand why I stood there dumbfounded by the malfunction but i know I completely lost all train of thought on what I was doing and how I was supposed to do it. Which brings me to... Planning. Your plan of attack seems to be the biggest part of negotiating a stage without screwing it up. Following your plan and not fudging it is what this takes to be successful. If I plan to make it in Limited then I need to really concentrate on learning to read stages and look at more ways to negotiate them. I have come to another understanding that if I do not take chances then I will not have any reward. i have started to understand how to cut time from my stages but i am still at the same skill level as far as my hits go. I am not moving any faster on the targets I am just moving faster between them and getting into position faster. By getting to where I need to be and knowing there are 11 rounds in my magazines I can take full advantage of the targets arrays and negotiate the obstacles much faster. My shooting on the move has improved greatly and in fact I am very impressed that I can do it as well as I do for my skill level. I know the trigger work has done something because when I get hits they are much faster and much more accurate. Now if I can just make sure and look at those pesky bumps they put on the top of the gun!!!!

Not so sure you need to worry about those bumps bro'. I seem to recall someone saying they were going to shoot open this year if I did. My open blaster is arriving this week. I beleive the gauntlet has been thrown down!! I'm there with you on figuring out stages. It is always interesting for me as a lefty. You would be surprised how many stages I run "backwards". Shawn Knight
Some interesting things happened last weekend. I did horribly at one of the most fun matches I have ever shot but that isn't what is interesting. What is interesting is I shot a darkhouse(the cave) and something occurred to me. I saw my sights moving. I couldn't see anything in that place but I could see those sights running back and forth like crazy! What is did was it took my eyes off the targets and put it on the gun. I got pretty darned poor points but I shot the stage pretty dang fast. I really didn't care about points as much as I cared about putting 2 holes in each target. 3rd fastest time and I got 2 holes on every target. Didn't matter much in the big picture but what is really important to me isthat fact that those sights were moving and I could see them. Other interesting things were stage analysis. I did pretty darned good at getting the most out of my 10/11 rounds. I pushed my limits(little too far at times) and I really made the grade when it came to getting it right. Well almost... Stage 7 was not a good plan. It would have been a good plan if I had stuck to it, but no it was not a good plan cuz I could not follow it. I totally forgot 2 targets. I think I could add one second per target to my time and add the 2 alpha per... That would have been nice! Would have been close to 2nd place on the stage. POINTS POINTS POINTS!!!! I HAVE TO SHOOT MY FRIGGIN POINTS!!!! When am I going to understand this? I refuse to move to Limited until I start getting better at shooting the points. It is useless to move to major scoring if I am still inaccurate. 3 shots to hit a 15 yard popper is crap!! Hell 3 shots to hit a 12 yard popper is totally stupid! If I could hit what I aim at I would be about 20% better!! THe First shot I take at a popper should hit it and take it down every single time!!!! Oh well I had a ton of fun and got to meet a bunch of great folks!!
