S&w 017-8 Action Work

I have S&W model 017-8 with a 6in barrel. What little triggers do you guys do to your rimfires? I did the action job on my 625 it turned out real good. I don't wish to bob the hammer. I love this gun, I know there is room for inprovement.

Thanks

mshotwell, I did a search on the revo forum with "rimfire" as the criteria and found some stuff on action jobs for the 17's. Consensus was you could get a smooth action but not a light one. Probably around 8 lbs. I have a 17 10 shot and that is about what I can tell you. Later rdd

While we're on rimfires, is there much difference in the pull between 6shot and 10shot S&W revolvers?

Thanks in advance,

Al

No. actually I have experience in this. I had my 6 shot converted to 10 shot and there was no appreciable difference.

As for lightening, I smoothed the action, replaced the main spring, replaced the rebound spring and adjusted the single action pull so it holds 3# but breaks clean with a slight touch. I installed an Ultra Dot and shoot bulls eye with the local club just for the trigger time. I shoot slow fire single action, timed and rapid DA. Great cheap practice. Only revolver shooter there too :)

I used one at my range when I forgot my 617. I was shocked to find there wasn't any difference. I just assumed their would be.

The reason you can't lighten the 617 too much is the variance in .22 ammunition.

Randy Lee was supposedly working up some sort of his witchcraft that would allow that obscenely light action technology to translate over into the rimfire realm. But then he sorta went silent on us.

I only know a few things about trigger work on 617s: (1) You can lighten up the mainspring tension some, but not nearly as much as with the center-fires, (2) CCI Mini-Mag ammo is pretty good for ignition reliability if you lighten up the actions, (3) you will ding the edges of the chambers if you dry-fire the gun with one of those C&S extended pins installed, and (4) a cratex bullet-tip on a dremel tool works nicely for removing chamber edge dings! :P

(I actually shot a 617 in the rimfire event at the Steel Challenge a couple years ago. It was fun, but next time I'll probably use one of my High Standards.)

I'll have to disagree with the others here, having shot both back to back. The 10 shot carries up noticeably earlier than the 6 shot and has a distinctly different double action feel. It's not a huge deal but it's noticeable if you're a discerning revo shooter.

Who did the conversion and is it a lot of $$'s?

I can see the frames would be the same, but what gets changed out other than the cylinder?

It varies from gun to gun (same with the 6-shot version, actually...) and all depends on how well, or how poorly, the hand is fit to the ratchet at the factory. When new, my 10-shooter had way too much "pre-time" and an ugly staginess to the trigger pull. With a bit of gentle work with the stone (even I have to admit this is not dremel country, boys!), you would not be able to tell the DA trigger pull on my 10-shooter from that on a well-fitted 6-shooter.

One point of interest: There is a specific hand made for the 10-shot 617 and it is different than any other hand. A "conversion" from one version to the other would involve not only changing out the cylinder assembly, but the hand as well.

No one has EVER accused me of that. I just pull the trigger

Change is cylinder and hand. IIRC, with the discount I get at S&W it was about $150 and was completed for me in the Performance Center. It took a while, but it was worth the wait.

As for the difference, I guess I never got to be "Discerning" over the last 30 years or so. I will have to add that to my practice :D:D:D
