Bowling Pin Practice For Osu Match

Okay, managed to score some near death bowling pins from local Alley.

A rimfire pin match at OSU range in columbus looms the middle of next week.

Kyle if you are listening and want to go down and have fun and take home a medal or two give me a shout.

The way I understand it. 5 pins, 8" apart, shooter 25ft from pins, Starting from low ready (pistol must be touching the bench) I'm assuming one handed could be two though?

At the beep, knock 'em down.

I thought this would be fairly easy. According to the coach last year the match was won with a 2.25 second run. I practiced until my times started increasing from cold and fatigue. Got into the 3 second range.

Most of my time is finding the first target. I started with a 1.50 first shot and worked that down to 1.10 or slightly lower. Have not managed to hit the first target under 1 second (yet)

I'd like to really do well at this match. Looking for help in getting the time down on the first shot. Help with practice techniques dry and live fire appreciated.

Those guys that are used to that low ready/rail start are way ahead of me on the first shot.

Give me a yell...I'll likley go watch (OK...I'm sure I'll shoot it if I get gear and such together.)

Is Jim Sweeney (OSU pistol coach) running it ?

Yes match is run by Jim Sweeny Signup at 5:30 ish Basement of ROTC building on OSU campus. Since posting I found out this is a two hand event. (I was practicing with one)

The price as I understand it: $2 gets you 6 runs on the pins. start from low ready. at beep, knock pins over.

To get there:

Take 315 South and exit at Lane Avenue Left or East.

Lane ave across the new suspension bridge onto OSU campus proper.

On the right are sports complexes. Ice rink etc. ROTC building is 4th big building on the right. Converse Hall is proper name. Has "ROTC" written on the side of the building. Hard to miss. Range is downstairs as you walk in.

If you want to borrow some equipment, you are welcome to use any of mine. Lots of spares. I think most of mine will cycle as fast as you shoot.

Give me a call if you have any questions.

See you there.

Sign up starts about 5~5:30

If you can't make it but know of a few IPSC shooters that need a winter fix, this may hold them for a while. Pass it along

Usually just the Beeeeeeep,, Bang, Bang, Bang, Damit, Bang bang. makes me feel better.

Well, here is my match report...

I got back in town a bit late. I started running around trying to get my .22 together. I found some rounds...threw a few drops of oil on the rails...then realized I didn't have a mag handy for the gun. The mag is "around"...just not sure where. So, I thought...screw it...I'll just go watch...maybe somebody will offer me up a gun.

So I get there and I can hear the shooting going on...but, all the doors are locked. I end up going around the building...beating on the doors and hoping somebody will hear me (while being on an indoor range with hearing protection on ???).

I finally spy this girl inside. She is fighting a pop machine, trying to get her purchase out of the contraption. I can see her through a window...struggling away. I go around the building to where there is a door close to her and start knocking. She hears me and lets me in. Then, just like "the Fonz", I tap-tap on the side of that pop machine...and I kid you not...out comes the bottle of pop that she had been fighting to get out of that machine. B)

Of course, Coach Sweeney offered me up his gun right away. I got to shoot. :)

They had two courses of fire. One was a rack of five bowling pins. The other had a bottom rack with one scoring pin right in behind two "no-shoot" pins on a bottom rack, then a top rack with 3 more pins, then a little piece of steel of to the side. The steel couldn't have been more than two inches by four inches.

You got three runs at each cof. I went in thinking you used all three runs in the scoring. An error on my part. Turns out they only use you best run of the three from each cof.

I got to be the last shooter and did my run on the pin rack when everybody else was done. I managed a 2.34, which was enough to push me into second place at the match overall.

And...yes, the match fee really was $2 !!!

I'm very glad that you only took second place. Tony Marshall I shoot bullseye with did a fine job and was quite happy to beat the likes of Kyle. I was there and not exactly sure where I placed. Somewhere below 5th. Top 10 I'd guess, I did manage a 3.15 on the straight 5 pin run. I've done better in practice but not much.

Had a double allibi which botched my other chances to improve that score. I too thought it was a total score rather than best run. Good thing, One of my runs on the straight five was 26.xx I had a fail to fire and then fail to extract so after fussing with it a few seconds, I pulled the mag, dropped the slide again and hit it once more. Bang it went. Grrrrrr. Then a 10 second penalty for leaving a pin. Okay kick me while I'm down.

Still a heck of a good time for $2.

They should hold these at least weekly. And should charge more. I'd be happy to pay $5 if it was held regularly.

Okay, continue on dreaming.

  • 1 month later...

Hey everyone, if you ever make it to the greater Kansas City area on a Wed night give me a shout. We have bowling pin matches every week. During the winter time we shoot .22 stuff with pistols and rifles and during the rest of the year we shoot center fire pistol and every so often even shotgun.

Feel free to stop by the Midwest Pin Blasters web site.
