Teaching My Dad To Shoot.

A few weeks ago my father called and was interested in purchasing a 22 pistol to plink w/. I have been shooting competitively for the last 12 years and he has never shown an interest in my shooting, until now. I showed him what needed to be done to purchase a pistol in Nebraska. He went and got a handgun purchase permit, then we went to the local gun store and picked out a nice Browning Buckmark. I had to wait a few weekends for the weather to be nice. This past weekend we both had the time to get out and the weather was nice.

At the range, I showed him how to use the thumb stud on the mag to help w/ loading. I showed him the proper way to hold the pistol while shooting. Its gonna take a few times out for him to learn not to put his left thumb behind the slide. We started out at 7yards and then moved back to 15-20 yards. He had no problems keeping all of the rounds in a 4" circle or taking down some bowling pins that were handy. He also shot a few rounds out of my open gun, M&P40 and my 3gun.

He said he had alot of fun and would like to do it again. Im thinking the next time there is a steel match he should be ready for some fun. My dad is 62 years old and he is getting ready to retire in a few years. It would be really cool if he got into competitive shooting w/ me.

I'm with you Justin. A couple of years ago I gave my father a Kimber 1911 for Christmas and showed him some of the basics. He loves that pistol (and I do too considering he no longer bothers me about giving him mine) and loves to shoot it. He's asked about maybe doing IDPA but don't know how serious he is. When I come back from Afghani-land, I'll take him out to the local IDPA club and show him their game (he's gone to a couple of IPSC matches and it's not for him).

There is nothing like shooting with Dad though. I built him a 10/22 and when we go and shoot it's heads up against each others 22's for who buys dinner. He's got the excuses/trash talkin' down though.

When he loses, "I bet you think you're pretty tough, beatin' up on al old man, who's out of shape and who's blind."

When he wins, "Not bad shootin' for an old man, who's out of shape and who's blind."

I used to take my father to the range when he was in town. He was in Korea and had a Colt 45 that he shot occasionally. He'd never shot an AR-15 until about 3 years ago when he tried mine. He had a blast! Shot all the ammo I had brought with us. Also tried my Para competition gun, and some 22's I own. We had a good time shooting. My father passed away in September. Wish I could go to the range again with him. Justin, bring your dad down. He'll have a good time at the match shooting with you! Tobydog.

Sry to hear about your dad.

Im gonna try to get him to come to a steel match. I think he could handle standing and shooting. I dont know about him shooting a USPSA match.
