CM 99-14 Hoser Heaven

Recommended Posts

Well......since I put up two classifiers I was pretty happy with.......here is one I really FUBAR'ed.
Hoser Heaven is shot at 12 yards and has lots of no shoots and some hard cover. There are three strings and each one is timed.
Needless to say I went for speed over hits........and crashed and burned.......
I shot this in August of '00 when I was trying to get classified so it was a good learning experience.......speed isn't always your friend when no shoots are in abundance.
Got all my shots off though......wink.gif
Unclassified limited, 22 pts, 24.444% classifier.......

icer, this is one I haven't shot yet.  I sure like the irony of the name.  "Hoser Heaven", but it sounds like you hose and it goes to hell?   Sounds like an accuracy stage with a hook to make you try and shoot it too fast.  Can't wait to run into this one someplace!  Thanks for the heads-up.   I've noticed a lot of us crash on classifiers when we are right there, lingering just below the next level.  (read that trying too hard) We hear alot about sandbaggers, but most guys are out there giving it all they've got.

Icer,

I shot this one last year when I was starting out.  I shot a big, fat 16.667%

I am sure I could get to 20% now :)

This one really seperates the classes.

I sure would like to hear how everyone handles this stage.

Guys---

When I shoot this one again I won't feel like I have to get off every shot in order to get a M classifier. All 6 on string one freestyle is no problem, maybe 4/5 on the strong hand string with no mikes or no-shoots, and 3 solid A zone hits on the weak hand string.

Unlike many classifiers you don't get any extra time on the strong and weak hand stages on this one. A new shooter feels like he has to push it and get the shots off to get a great score. I crashed because of mikes in the hard cover and 1 or 3 no-shoots.

I also didn't have a good handle on the concept of no penalty mikes at the time.......thought I'd be penalized for any shots I didn't take......pays to do a little research beforehand.

It's a timed fire event so mikes and failure to engage don't penalize you. What it comes down to is points are everything. For string 1 you have just enough time to pick off your 6 A's. String 2 (strong hand) I took the three open targets first getting my easy hits first. Then I had time left over for two tight shots before my 5 seconds was up. String 3 (weak hand) I knew this one was gonna be ugly. The draw alone is gonna be all of 2+ seconds. So I just focused on the three open targets again. That's all the time that there was. It wasn't pretty, but I put some points up on the board. Only the top 11 shooters scored on this stage. The rest zeroed it. So I was rather proud of myself and my strategy. If you're ever forced to shoot this stage I'd recommend you think going slow, taking the open shots first (points) and then think about the tight ones "IF" there's time.

I shot this one last night during a four classifier match.  Production, Glock 34, Blade-Tech, unclassified.  (Just made C Limited)  I played it conservatively, drew to the left open target, transitioned to the other open targets and then threw a quick shot at the right target with hardcover.  Posted a total of 20 points; had one no-shoot negate half of that total.  This classifier was a surprise substitution or I might have benefitted from wiser counsel on this thread.  It was also my first stage of the night ---- not pretty.

Crashed and burned this one 2 weeks ago. Shot my G35 in Production. Confidence level was high, I knew I could do it. First string, 6 alphas. Confidence level soaring. Second string, 5 alphas, 1 mike, 1 noshoot. #^$#^!!!! Confidence plummeting. Third string, 1 alpha, 5 mikes, 3 noshoots. %#$&^$%*%#$@*!!!!!!

Totally lost my focus on the third string. Oh well, at least this one won't count with a big whopping 20pts, and a 22.222% on the big screen.

I drew to the left target and shot left to right on the first and third string, and reverse procedure on the second string.

I am of the opinion that this one is broken. I have recently seen some analysis for a selection of GMs which have shot this one and not come even close to what the Limited and Lim10 HHFs appear to be.

I did, however, feel slightly better when I realized my % was the same as a couple of the GMs that shot it.

Come on Sedro...apply some basic stats and fix the broken classifiers. If they won't be publishing a new classifier book due to cost the least they can do is fix the broken ones.

Of what use are theoretical classifier HHFs when no one has even come close to the HHF under real world conditions?

Hmmm...interesting. Those are some of the highest scores I have seen for this one. But they still are not real close to 100% of the HHF for Limited that was derived. Don't shoot open so didn't figure that one out.

Maybe the HHF is supposed to be an unachievable score. I am probably nuts but I feel that the HHF should be reflective of what can be actually achieved under real world conditions; not some theoretical maximum. Oh well.

I shot this one recently and got 54 points (I'm one of Erik's statistics). Shot 6 A's, 6 C's, and was clean of penalties. I took 6 shots freestyle, 3 stronghand, and 3 weakhand. In retrospect, I am sure I could have gotten off at least 4 good shots stronghand, maybe a sloppy 5th, but I didn't try for more than 3 because I completely underestimated my capabilities there, then wound up waiting quite a bit for the beep as the realization set in that I should have taken another shot, dooohh! I was right on the money weakhand with my dot just bouncing in recoil from the third shot as the stop beep sounded. Freestyle, I had some large fraction of a second left which I spent trying to index on a 7th target instead of focusing on more A's during the 6 shot string.

All in all, I did well, poorly. I am pretty confident that I could shoot 60-65 points on this "booger" if I faced it again soon.

Regards,

There's clearly a right and a wrong way for a beginning shooter to try this one. I think I've found the wrong way. Trying to get off all the shots doesn't help. Now to find the other one :-)

Wow, not many folks have posted on this one. Probably because it sucks. Pretty tough stage. Any national percentages for the above scores?

Shot it today.

Limited 66pts.

Smitty,

Divide by 90 (Max score)

Yours ought to = 73.33%

My 61 points should = 67.77%

I'd say you had a bad day :o

I just shot this one today. We all were flustered......what a classifier. So many no shoots were hit we almost had to go to Brownells to pick up more white pasters....

Look at it this way, the no shoots were so dead, that by the time the weak hand string came around, the not shoots would have been very dead and wouldn't have been standing to get in the way.... :)

Oh yeah, and I was one of those that tried to get ALL the rounds off....what a mistake. Next time I'll just take my time and work on accuracy.

I think I ended up with 14 total net points.

I thought this was pretty cool to read. It should be good incentive for D and C class shooters to see a current GM talk about shooting a 16% just a couple of years ago. ;) Thanks Flex.

Just shot this today. If not for a weak hand no-shoot, I would have had 61 pts for 67.77%... would'a, could'a, should'a... After a decent freestyle (6A) and strong hand run (5A), I lost focus and rushed the weak hand. Tanked it actually. I'm on the verge of breaking out of C class. This effort only served as a learning experience.

I am of the opinion that this one is broken. I have recently seen some analysis for a selection of GMs which have shot this one and not come even close to what the Limited and Lim10 HHFs appear to be.

Seems to me that 90 points, a perfect score on this shouldn't be that hard if you apply just enough speed to your accuracy. The problem IMHO is that in Fixed Time vs. Comstock or Viginia count, extreme speed in the latter can negate a few poorly placed shots. Fixed time changes the rules. You have to know the limit of your ability to accurately place your shots. IMHO it's not that it's broken. It's just a less frequently tested skill.

Years later...no better.

I like fixed time, but this thing it brutal...especially with the noshoots.

This is not only tough to shoot, it was a real PITA to score. Not that it was that hard, but seemed to take forever. Why not shoot all 3 strings and then score? Is there a reason for scoring after each string?

Since that 'score between strings' requirement wasn't part of the original WSB, I suspect it was added when the "Max 2 No-Shoot" rule was implemented. Hopefully, that will be gone in the next rulebook and we can return to running some of these classifiers without the added time to satisfy that requirement.

"9.4.2 Each hit visible on the scoring area of a penalty paper target will

be penalized the equivalent of twice the point value of a maximum

scoring hit, up to a maximum of 2 hits per penalty target."

I shot this one this weekend. It was one of the two stages I won, however, when compared to the national classifier scores it blows. If I run into this one again I will not try to get in all the shots or if I do try I will take the weak and strong hand shots up to the upper A/B since misses are non-penalty misses.
