dave pasos
I found a Remington 788 action with a bull barrel. Complete rifle. Is this a good action? the only thing it is barreled in 243 cal. Could this be rechambed? The barrel twist is 10 in 1. thanks
Chris Jordan
Dave a .243 is a is a .308 Win necked down to 6mm. Just hit it with a chamber reamer (well may not be that simple) and viola! Any of the .308 based wild cats are available. I really like the 7mm-08 but the 6.5mm-08 sparks my interst for long range work. Hope this helps, Chris
dave pasos
I get the idea but what about the action of the 788? Would a 6mm08 work for long range or too light a bullet? thanks
Phil Dunlop
Dave, I think the big deal about the 6.5mms is the availability of high BC bullets. There are such bullets for the 6mm, Lapua and Sierra make 105/107gn bullets respectively, which can be loaded to match the 6.5s on paper. The limitation is the rifling, I can't recall the required twist (Kelly??) but I think its faster than standard. I'm not too clued up on modern wildcats, but there can't be much difference between a 243 and a 6mm 08, the 243 is made from the 308 anyway. I'm told by a local varmint shooter that the heavier bullets only come into their own at >600yds. I load my 6mm Rem with Hornadys 87gn BTHP and I'm really happy with them. I don't know much about the 788, but I recall all the reveiws I read on the rifle (3 I think) praised its accuracy. P.D.
actionshooter
The action on the 788 is a bit different but the accuracy is there. They are good actions and a few years ago they were sought after by sihloette shooters. They also have a extremely fast lock time. Steve
38supPat
I've shot a couple of 788's a .22-250 and a .222 if I remember right, I know the .22-250 had exceptional accuracy. But I don't recall the 788 ever being made with a bull barrel, could be its already been customized for target use. Pat

2alpha
The 788's best features are its fast locktime and rigid action. Some didn't like the miltilug bolt but lots of very accurate rifles have been built on the 788 action. JJ
