Gonzogun Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 Does anybody make a magwell for the single stack that goes all the way around the mag well opening? Like the ICE for the STI's. Haven't been able to find one. If nobody makes one, why not? Maybe I'll make my own. Thanks for any input.
Dusty Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 check on Evolution Gun Works website. I think I saw one on there the other day.
Gonzogun Posted March 25, 2006 Author Posted March 25, 2006 I don't think that any of those work. Anybody know for sure? Magwells EGW
BOGA Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 svi piece is very nice. Its a 2 piece magwell, available in S/S and alum. No insert. Price is a little less than 2 S&A's.
Bdavis Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 Dick Hienie makes one; however it required milling the frame. He sells the kits and there should be several compotent gunsmiths who can do the work. I don't believe that Dick is currently taking any new work. Check it on his website. Look at the package and it should be the Tactical/Carry package that has this installed, just so you can see it. I have one and it works very well. But it is pricey. Bill
Merlin Orr Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 SVI makes one. Be prepared for sticker shock. Big price in SS but not to bad for the Aluminum version. It is a BIG magwell and I don't think it would fit either the IDPA or USPSA box - but don't know this for a fact.... You do have to get the SVI mainspring housing of have someone that is Very handy with tools to install it for you. Mine (on a Trojan) reguired some filing and fitting. I sent it to the local gunsmith for the install. Looked great when done and...did I say it is huge??
DougCarden Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 Check the one at www.pinnacle-guns.com. Mark makes one that attaches similar to the Brown one and it is bigger and wraps around fully. DougC
Gonzogun Posted March 28, 2006 Author Posted March 28, 2006 (edited) don't like the looks of the pinnacle. SVI looks pretty good seems to be a better transition on the front. It seems like I alway catch the nose of the bullet on the edge of the front strap. still havn't been able to figue out if EGW has one or not. can't tell from the website Edited March 28, 2006 by Gonzogun
mpolans Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 (edited) I think Ed Brown's were the best. Too bad he stopped making them. I always thought they were one of his signature products. Edited March 28, 2006 by mpolans
dirtypool40 Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 I have one of the Heinie kits new in bag, grips and all. I think they are like $150 now. If you want it, lemme know, I'll make you a deal on it. PM me.
Newguy Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 If you'll be using the mag well for S/S better make sure it handles 8 round mags. I have a Pinnacle for L-10 that works great for 10 round mags but not for 8-rounders. A mag well that wraps around (the SVI?) may be too deep to handle shorter mags. The S&A seems to be a good compromise.
bagdrag Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 I could be wrong, but I thought the EGW one that wraps around the frontstrap for SS is a weld-on piece. Here's a photo from their website: This is a photo of a Jardine weld-on magwell:
Braxton1 Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 The issue with a full wrap-around mag well on a single-stack is the lip on the front of almost everybody's basepads. If you were to make a magwell that was like the "Ice", it would not allow the mag to seat fully. That lip would hit the magwell and stop it. Removing the lip wouldn't be an option, as there would be absolutely nothing to prevent over-insertion. (The taper at the top of a the hi-cap, double-stack mags keeps this from happening in them.)
mpolans Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 With the weld on ones that do a full wrap-around, you machined off the bottom part of the frame and welded on the magwell. You can see in the pic of the EGW one, the machined out area for the lip of the magazine. FWIW, the EGW one looks like the Ed Brown one. Glad to see someone is still making them. Merlin Orr Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 On my Caspain Race Ready frame the standard mags seat perfectly and I have yet to overinsert an 8 rnd. mag. The old Wilson 10 rounders with the little weld tab on the mag body WILL and do overinsert in the Race Ready frame. With the CM 10 round mags I had to file off a smidge on the plastic basepad leg to get proper insertion depth. YMMV..
Gonzogun Posted April 18, 2006 Author Posted April 18, 2006 Ended up getting an SVI magwell I like it Easy to install Comes with new MSH
simonsay Posted April 18, 2006 Posted April 18, 2006 Ended up getting an SVI magwellI like it Easy to install Comes with new MSH How do the wilson 8's fit? Could I bother you for a pic with the/a mag inserted? Thanks
tightloop Posted April 18, 2006 Posted April 18, 2006 If you don;t mind telling, how much was it and are there any problems with over insertion of 8 round mags?
Gonzogun Posted April 19, 2006 Author Posted April 19, 2006 If you don;t mind telling, how much was it and are there any problems with over insertion of 8 round mags? Oh yeah... I forgot to tell you. Went to my first match with the new magwell, (I shoot L10) Checked my chip 10 rounders the night before...everything hunky dory. next morning first stage (I use an 8 rounder for my Barney mag), put my Barney mag in, rack a round, load up my 10 rounder...Standy By!....Beeep!.....Click. Thats right. The 8 rounders did not seat all the way into the magwell. I needed to file off the front of the pads to fit all the way into the magwell. Lesson learned. Cost...Aluminum magwell, steel MSH about $140 shipped.
PJONES5 Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 If you don;t mind telling, how much was it and are there any problems with over insertion of 8 round mags? I have the SVI magwells on my two Springfield. The Wilson 47D pads work fine, no problem with over insertion they also fit THE IDPA BOX AND THE USPSA BOX. When you go to a IDPA match better take a box with you though pat
