joecichlid Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 It started life as an STI Eagle 5.5 and was worked over by Dawson when he was still working for STI. It had the slide lightened and cut for a Doctor style site and some other work. When I got it I HAD to have a C-More and a few other doodads as well. I can't wait to shoot it this week, this .38 Super is a whole new animal to me. Joe W.
eric nielsen Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 Did you find that gun in uspsa.com classified ads? I just a gun like yours described there. Dave's a great gunsmith, no doubt.
joecichlid Posted March 14, 2006 Author Posted March 14, 2006 Yeah, got it off of the USPSA site then had the scope mount installed and added a mag well so far. I still need mags and mag pouches before I can really start competing with it though. Joe W.
scooterj Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 I haven't seen a 2 piece slide stop in years. Make sure the screw stays tight.
joecichlid Posted March 14, 2006 Author Posted March 14, 2006 Thanks guys. I will let you know how it shoots when I get a chance to put some rounds through it. As for the slide stop, I have heard that and will keep an eye on it to make sure it is tightened. Another thing that stands out on this gun is the STI logo on the slide in front of the ejection port. I am going to give STI a call and see if they can tell me anything about this gun. Joe W.
joecichlid Posted September 17, 2006 Author Posted September 17, 2006 I can't believe I forgot to post this. A few weeks after my last post on this thread I FINALLY got a chance to contact STI about the gun. It was originally sold as a slide/frame kit back in 1993 to someone in Texas. From there it was sent back to STI and the gun was most likely built buy Dawson himself, they confirmed that he was indeed working there at the time the gun was sold and when it was returned for the work. S/N on the slide, frame, grip and barrel ALL match and are in the mid 1000 range. This gun had less than 1000 rounds through it when it arrived to me and it showed, VERY clean and with a beautifully deep blued finish. It has now had a few thousand more rounds through it and is finally settling down. In the last several months I have not had so much as a hick up out of this gun other than pilot error. lol That oversized mag button gets in the way every so often. I have since gotten a nice big stick with Grams internals and base pad as well as new springs and base pads for the 126mm mags that came with the gun. With the new base pads I am getting 20 rounds (21 if I insert the mag with the slide locked back) in each mag and 27 (28 if I insert the mag with the slide locked back) rounds in the big stick. My old gun was fun to shoot and tought me a LOT about mag changes and it has helped me out in a lot of ways but now it is retired to steel shooting and bowling pin shooting. This gun is a Kimber Classic Custom in .45 ACP with Red Buff scope mount, Tasco PDP5 CMP red dot, EGW mag well and a Clark Custom (drop in with 1 inch comp installed) as well as a few other little gadgets. For those interested, here are some photos of my STI open gun in the condition I bought it.
