I'm interested in building a 45 super gun and wringing as much velocity as I can out of it. Essentially, all that is required to run 45 super in steel/steel (govt. size) pistol is a 28 pound recoil spring, with corresponding firing pin spring and whah-la you've got a $5 dollar 45 super conversion.

Anyhow, an extra inch of barrel will help to further achieve the full potential of the cartridge. My question is, with regard to a bushing/barrel fit - is it reasonable to drop a 6" barrel in a 5" gun? It seems to me that 5” barrels flair a little at the muzzle to better lock-up with the bushing installed at the end of the slide - so I'm thinking that a 6" barrel might not work great in a 5" slide - but I'm not sure. Any comments?

Oh, this project is so that I can add handgun hunting as a function to my Kimber Custom Classic existing roles as carry, IDPA and bowling pin pistol.

Thanks for any advice.

Just tell the barrel maker it is going into a 5" gun, and they'll send you the right one. If you were making a 6" longslide, then they'd make it as you said, with bushing to fit at muzzle instead of 1" back.

.45 super really needs a ramped barrel. It is possible to put a 6in barrel in a 5in slide, I had to use a seperate bushing for the long barrel because of the dia. issue at the end of the barrel you mentioned. Before I put a lot of work into this project I would look into Clark Guns 460. Rowland conversion. Its just a better set up and steps the 1911 up in 44. mag territory.-----Larry

And sorted they need to be. In fact double sorted. It would be a bad deal for a super round to wind up in a pistol not set up for it, and they will chamber. Worse is for a super load to get into a ACP case and then into any pistol. The 460 with its longer case is the way to go.-----Larry

We used to do it all the time in the Old Days... :P

I'm pretty sure he's referring to 1911's here and not "Flint-locks". :D

thanks haven’t shot hp loads through it yet, it’s been a range toy but we’ll see. It’s certainly capable but I have the springs dialed down to eat lp ammo

I run 8lb springs in my Open gun and it works great.

I just finished my first 80% and really like it. My question is i have 5inch barrel and want a suppressor do i just get 6inch threaded barrel?

Get a 6 inch barrel then cut, thread and crown as needed.  Your suppressor manufacturer can provide the specs for how much thread you need and any other details.  In addition to Clark, Nowlin and Bar-Sto sell 6 inch barrels for 1911.

Best way to keep the ammo sorted is to use only brass for 45ACP and nickel plated for 45 Super.  I do that with 38 Super. Brass for my lower power carry loads and nickel for hot competition loads.
