harald Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 Can a 1911 frame be cut and rebuilt to fit a S_I 2011 polymer grip? I see this is a lot of work and money, but can it be done?

For enough money, anything can be done. However, I suspect you could probably buy a few brand new STI frame kits for the cost of the labor to weld and machine it. Heck, you'd be better off starting from scratch and making an entirely new upper frame section (which at least one person has done before).
Derek45 Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 Brownells carries STI frames for under $400. http://www.brownells.com part number 791-250-001 Also Brazos, shootersconnection, etc. I doubt any gunsmith could do it for twice that price.

benny hill Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 There's not enough meat in the frame for it to work.
wombat Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 Heck, you'd be better off starting from scratch and making an entirely new upper frame section (which at least one person has done before). I have seen at lest half a dozen people who have.

It's a patented item (that's been "infringed" upon internationally), so you won't find a legit source, if you find one at all.
shred Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 There are places you can get "80%" STI/SV-compatible frames. They are in no way made by or approved by STI (or SV, to my knowledge). The one I saw was made of two halves welded together longitudinally. I forget where I saw them, but I some googling & searching the gun boards should turn them up.

For a moment there It felt like shopping in "Flea-Bay".

jjanglin Posted March 2, 2006 Posted March 2, 2006 Guys: Doing stuff likes been posted never works out doing all that takes so much time your better off buying new. Fixing a messed up frame is more costly usually than to buy new. To have a gun thats good, short cuts dont work at all. In my view CASPIAN is the only way to go. Jim Sailors Custom
diehli Posted March 2, 2006 Posted March 2, 2006 gotta get a handful of these... Pun intended? Methinks Harald is not U.S.-based and, thus, might have a problem importing STI frames.
