AGYoung Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 Did You Know? The term "the whole 9 yards" came from W.W.II fighter pilots in the South Pacific. When arming their airplanes on the ground, the .50 caliber machine gun ammo belts measured exactly 27 feet, before being loaded into the fuselage. If the pilots fired all their ammo at a target, it got "the whole 9 yards."
dirtypool40 Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 yup, but that's one of those sayings that gets a lot of confusion. Pool table baize was sold by the yard....and rumor has it that it takes 9 yards to cover a certain size. men's suit fabric, as in "Just for pants and jacket or the whole nine yards." But yes, the stuff I have read says the real one is the 50 ammo belt.
