3GunF1Guy Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 Can some point me in the direction of who makes the timers and the stop plate mechanism? Also is it reliable? I am just wondering how many times in the match the stop plate does not work and they have to go the the back-up timer? Thanks Scott
shred Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 I have no idea who makes the stop plate impact sensors for the SC. They look vaguely custom-made in somebody's garage. In my limited experience (3 SCs), they work reliably for centerfire bullets, even with 120-ish PFs. They rarely work for .22's, but occasionally register even then.
AlamoShooter Posted February 25, 2006 Posted February 25, 2006 It is called a 'Micro Switch" in a ? I think? normaly Open setup. Check your manuel for your timer with the stop it will say if the switch should be ="Normaly Open" or " Normaly Closed. This means that the switch will close the circit or open it. Like a door bell is normaly closed A Micro Switch is the very same switch that is used on the stop for the case feed on the 650. that one has a lever on it. For the stope plate you just mount the thing to a block behind the stop plate. = the stop plate must be on a spring so that it can 'jump' back. The plate gets hit ...it jumps back... hits the arm on the switch and closed the circit to stop the timer. Protecting the wire to the switch is the pessky thing. Raidio Shack may even have the switch. or pay Dillion for one. should be about $3.50 each.
DougCarden Posted February 25, 2006 Posted February 25, 2006 Scott, I think another reason they have it set up that way is that they have display screens for spectators, so they can see the time after the stop plate hit. For our local matches we just use the timer and have never run into any problems. They are not mandatory, but if you were having a lot of spectators they would be a great idea. DougC
shred Posted February 25, 2006 Posted February 25, 2006 Were I going to try and make one that sits low on the pole like at the SC, and not behind the plate, I'd start by ripping apart a cheap pedometer to if that mechanism would work reliably to detect impact.
AlamoShooter Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 (edited) I probly have a few Micro Switches that are use for Clay target buttons. If a photo would help the switches are a common item. The mounting needs to be adjustable so that the bounce can be set so as not to jusmp back and break the thing. The Stop thing is only realy good to me if more than one hit is on the stop. The first hit on a stop plate is the one that counts = we normaly review the timer back for the shooter, to give them the time for the first hit. mounting the switch is not a big deal. the probelm is the wire and how to keep it form getting eat up by the bullet splater at the base ,or as it passes by the other targets. Like on Show Down the stop plat is just behind two closer plates. If you shot a lot of steel matches you can see it is not a big deal. Just if the Ro is not watching the shots and the shooter. I know the IPSC ROs watch just the shooter. I watch both the shooter and what he is shooting at. Jamie Edited February 26, 2006 by AlamoShooter
3GunF1Guy Posted March 2, 2006 Author Posted March 2, 2006 What I really want to with it is set it up so that when you hit the plate it activates a clay thrower (or two). I would use it in our 3-gun matches. Like "Shoot the plate then the crosser and a teal. shoot the next plate and get a rabbit and a incomer." you get the idea it would be awesome in a 3-gun match. So I'll give the microswith thing a try and see if I can make it work. Thanks Scott
