Singlestack Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 The company my wife works for gave her a PC. It is a P3 Dell Dimension 4100. They completely wiped the HD clean so it has no OS. I'm going to give it to a fellow computerless shooter but I need a OS so he can use it. Anybody have a OS like Windows 2000 or something that I could put on it?
dfwmiket Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 At the risk of sounding too geekly, check out one of the free linux distros that are out right now. SuSe, RedHat, etc. They've made great strides, and all cost substantially less than a Windows OS. Mike
Singlestack Posted February 23, 2006 Author Posted February 23, 2006 Thanks but this will be his FIRST PC. He has almost no computer savy and I really don't want to set him up with something that I can't answer his questions.
vincent Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 Does the CPU have a Microsoft Windows Product Key sticker on the outside of the case? Most Dells will have one. If so then the system technically has a license for whatever is on the sticker and then you it should be legal to install that OS. If all you need is media to go with the license then you can find it via Bittorent.

I can tell it had Windows 2000 Professional on it but the rest of the sticker is gone. It has a Dell service tag on it with a number. Would that be of any use?
shred Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 Sounds like whoever owned it was careful about their volume licensing deal.. as such, it's unlikely you'll be able to get the original OS license legally. Punching the Service Tag into the Dell web site will get you a little history on the box, but no OS download. The cheapest way to get a copy of the OS is get a handy student to buy a copy.. Student pricing is pretty good.
TBF Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 Let me know if Windows Millenium Edition will do. I have an original disk with activation # I would send you for a $ 10.00 donation to the forum ( Shipping included ). Travis F.

Travis F. Thank you for the very kind offer Travis, but Huston's offer is just what I was looking for. If he can't find his disks, I will be getting back with you. Acckk!! Stay away from Windoze ME...!! Buy something new. I hear ya Siggy but this is a P3 and I am giving it to a friend so I really don't want to sink any more money in it that I have to. If I was going to go out and buy a new OS I would just buy a new PC. I've got a Dell Win XP home around here someplace thats not being used. PM sent The shooting community rocks. We are gonna fix this fellow up and get him on here one way or another.
wgnoyes Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 Let me know if Windows Millenium Edition will do. Ugh! Microsoft's redheaded stepchild. I'll never understand why they even bothered; it had the shortest shelf life of any of their operating systems. 10 months, and here comes XP. Anytime someone tells me they have a computer problem, I ask them what operating system. When they say "Windows ME, and what's happening is..." and I'll cut them off and say THAT'S your problem, get rid of ME and lay down XP.
