I was thinking about getting an EAA Witness Elite Stock probably in .40 or 10 mm (yes, 10mm), to shoot in IDPA's ESP division and for bowling pin matches. But the description of it says that it has a cone tapered barrel.

Here is a link to the description:

http://eaacorp.com/handguns-witness-elite-...escription.html

Would that make it illegal for IDPA?

I just looked at the rule book and on page 18 there is a list of illegal modifications.

Does that mean you can't use a cone tapered gun if it comes that way from the factory?

OR, does that mean you can't take your regular barrel out and replace it with a cone barrel w/o a bushing?

I know that the Witness is a clone of the CZ-75. So I looked at CZ's website and I couldn't find anything in their descriptions of the barrel/bushing to slide combination. AND I know there are plenty of folks who shoot CZ's in IDPA.

Is the Witness that much different from the CZ?

Here is a nice looking CZ, that makes weight:

http://www.cz-usa.com/01.detail.php?id=72

But it is listed as 9mm only!

They also have some nice looking guns in .40 with their Tactical Sport and Standard IPSC. However, I think they would be illegal because of the IDPA weight limits and the full length dust covers.

Any replies would be appreciated.

Thanks,

yep that is exactly what it means

"no heavy and/or cone style barrels without a barrel bushing"

unless of course it is a 4.2 inch barrel or less

Nope! Same website for EAA says it has a 4.5" long barrel.

Maybe I could shoot an email to IDPA.....Maybe

Thanks for the reply, Postal. Should be there tomorrow nite, if I can make up some ammo.

I was also eyeing a Kimber in 10mm, but I think the mag capacity is 8. So I would think that would be a disadvantage against the other 10 + 1 guns in ESP.

MMnn...I'll have to compare the Witness and a CZ-75 with their slides locked back, in person.

Thanks,

Sure would help to get a look at the gun. Lots of barrels have a geometric cone shape even if only a few thousandths for close fit at the muzzle and easy movement in recoil. I doubt something like that would be noticed or banned. If it were, that would mean I could not shoot my old Colt Mk IV S70 which has a pronounced cone to engage the collet bushing. (The rule book pg 22-23 does not say anything about the cone barrel going through a bushing or not.)

My plain vanilla "pre-B" CZ75 has a straight barrel from locking lugs to muzzle.

My rule is to not ask questions that you probably won't like the answer to.

Got to look at a Witness Steel, their bare bones model today, and a regular CZ-75.

Both have regular straight barrels in 'em.

Then I got to look at the 2006 paper catalog for EAA. In their description of the Elite Stock I want, they say the gun is legal for IDPA competition. No mention of the type of barrel.

So I'm just guessing that the website has not been updated in a while.

Maybe they got lots of calls/emails asking about it being legal when folks read the cone tapered part on their website, so they specifically spelled it out in their 2006 catalog that it is IDPA legal.

So that gun should be good to go for IDPA's ESP division, cocked and locked. It doesn't come w/ a decocker, but I guess you could use it for SSP by manually dropping the hammer. It is DA/SA. It coud also be used for Limited (a stretch, I know) and Limited 10 (for sure) and maybe Production (don't know for sure).

The 10mm should be good medicine for those bowling pins, too.

I've already got a .45 in a 1911 platform for CDP.

Thanks for the replies. You guys are a'right!
