syme71 Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 I need to buy some plastic material, preferably the same material used in Grams or STI basepads. I need a chunk of the stuff that I can grind down for a project that I am working on. Anyone know where I can buy this?
shred Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 Sounds like you want Delrin. Woodworking stores sometimes carry small quantities of that and other UHMW-type things, but typically you'll have to order it from a supplier or find a machine shop with some cast-offs if you want to play. Last I checked, it was ~$4-5 for a 1" x 12" rod.
Sixgun Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 This is where I get Delrin from.. Laird Plastics I see they have a location in NJ. They sell the scrap pieces fairly cheap. Ray
David Olhasso Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 www.mcmaster.com or www.mscdirect.com

Ray Laird around here has a $100 minimum order.. and doesn't blow out the off cuts , though they'll let the minimum slide occasionally Give them a call before trekking down there.

No kidding?!? Here in the Detroit, MI area it's a $25.00 min,(that they usually let slide) and they sell the off cuts. Definately worth a call, as it appears each location operates differantly. Ray
Scooter Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 Also try looking in the phone book. There's places like Tap Plastics or Interstate Plastics.
Rising Sight Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 David Olhasso mentioned McMaster.I use McMaster all the time for small quantities of Delrin. www.mcmaster.com
kimel Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 Small Parts Inc. (http://www.smallparts.com/)generally has all manner of stuff like that. Back in the days of the printed catalog I used to spend hours going through it trying to think up projects to use some of the cool stuff in there for. Also a great place to find oddball fasteners.
Scooter Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 McMaster Carr is good, but their prices are usually higher than if you find a local distributor. Plus the local places will usually have scrap pieces really cheap.
syme71 Posted February 23, 2006 Author Posted February 23, 2006 Thanks for the tips everyone. the smallparts.com site is pretty cool.
