Brian Enos's Forums... Maku mozo!

First Purchase

Recommended Posts

Well, have posted only a couple of times about what to buy first for rig, gun, etc. Then it hit me and I made my first purchase for the sport. I got the Brian, Matt and Saul book package.

I have been reading all of the old posts on this site and have decided to "start right" and instead of jumping in, buying gear, maybe getting it right, maybe not, I'll shoot my old P89, start working on fundamentals, try some other people's gear and make an informed decision. Any of the "good deals" on gear will still be there, or the next one will come down the road. There's always another "great deal".

I haven't put 500 rounds down range in my life, so I wouldn't be able to evaluate a proper gun fit anyway.

Actually, the books were my second purchase. I picked up 1,000 rounds of white box 9mm last weekend. I promised my adoptive mentor that I would be through that 1,000 before the next match.

In any case, I have already learned a lot of this forum. It is the least egotistical, most helpful, non-condescending group I have seen. Mimicks the group I met in person at my first match last weekend. Thanks for all of the help you offer to ALL of the noobs in the sport. It is critical to the continued success of the sport in my opinion. Please keep up the good work you are doing here.

Regards,

John

Hey, today's my first day, first post and for someone just getting started this looks like a great place to be! I have been shooting for a while, but never competitively (sp?) so this whole thing has really been a revelation. I like your thoughts about shooting what you have and growing from scratch. I'd be interested in your opinion of Brian's book, (helpful at this stage of the game, emphasis, etc.) when you get some time to read and digest it. I've got a Glock 22 and have barely been shooting it for about 8 years; (you go and run a couple hundred rounds through it once or twice a year), but I finally decided to shoot more, get accurate and buy a press so I could really enjoy myself. It seems that the folks here on this site are unusually kind and supportive to one another. I'm looking forward to this, and to getting to know some of you better.

Welcome to the Forum, 21...

Brian's book contains information that works at many levels. Buy it now and you can read it every year and get new revelations from it.

Read every post on this Forum for a week or two, learn to use the search function and you will know a hell of a lot about what to do next in a short time. :)

  • 3 weeks later...

Well, I listened to my own advice for a total of two weeks. After the guys let me shoot two clips on each stage last month (I showed up with a P89, two mags, no holster, no mag holders) :o I was hooked.

Since that fateful day, I picked up a new CR Speed belt, Limcat lefty holster and 4 CR speed mag holders from Shooters Connection (Thanks Chuck), An STI Executive (Thanks Interceptor-Check and FFL Form coming today) and Ordered a 550 and all accessories from Brian. All told, I am a cup of coffe and a bagel short of $3,000 and I am going to my first official match this weekend

Someone please tell me that the addiction subsides at some point! I have been reviwing the forum archives at least 3 hours a day and based my purchases on what I read. For the life of me, I can't believe this group. I have never seen a completely flame proof forum before. What I great group that I am proud to be associated with.

Now that I have a 550 coming, I'd better start delving into the reloading archives. Once again, I thank you all--not only for my responses to my questions and posts, but collectively to everyone's posts in the past. The archives truly hold a wealth of information.

Finally, now that I have been following daily for a few weeks, I have seen a lot of newbie questions come up in the BEginner section that are repeat questions even for the short time that I have been here. Thank you all for taking the time to answer questions for the umpteenth time and never slapping someone down with a "use the search function" comment. I now see that it would be easy to push someone new away by a short quip or worse, an unanswered question.

That sounds like me after the first time i shot a match(10 years ago). I also wanted the 'good gear' to shoot the next match. Just dont forget that the gear dosent sustitute good amounts of practice. I learned quickly that the cool mag pouches and the holster dosent make me shoot any better. It just makes u look cool shooting bad. :D
