Web Site For Computer Hardware And Software Testing Reviews

Recommended Posts

I always build my desktops computer myself and for the life of me can't remember what web site I used to go to so I could look at review of hardware and software. I haven't built a desktop comp in a couple of yrs and want to look at some DVD drive reviews. So what websites are out there???? I have found some but still can't find the one I'm looking for.

Theres on in particular that doesn't get any money from the companies and is honest about the reviews. I just can't remember the site.

Don't remember the name either, but I do remember the site you are talking about. It's the same people that make the programs for detemining "actual" processing speed of computers.

Would be probably more likely to find it if you Google computer consumer reports.

There's a bunch of sites.. tomshardware, anandtech, etc, etc.. I don't think any are completely impartial, even if they don't take industry money, so go to several of them and read between the lines. DVD drives are pretty much commodities now..

For twelve bucks a year the magazine MaximumPC is a great building aid. Last month (I think) they built a $1200 rig that smokes most of the machines that cost 3X's as much. They may not be completely impartial, but I've seen them sell a full page ad to a vendor on one page and then on the next page flame the crap out of one of it's products!

Cheap investment to keep on top of the latest gear.

Tom's Hardware and Anandtech were a big help when I built my current PC. Definitely a lot cheaper than commercially available machines with similar specs. So far, so good, as far as longevity goes.... ;)

+1 on CNet.com. I think it has the same or mostly the same info as ZDNet.com. Ratings from 1 to 10, detailed descriptions of features, user reviews. The sites are run by a company that sells computer magazines, and I've almost always found the reviews to be on point.

I went with the Sony Dual/Double layer DVD RW drive @16x It came with a copy of Nero which is nice. I installed it and I'm really pleased with the drive. I have already burned a family album with all the pictures from the last 2 1/2 yrs and added background music.

Its a real time consuming process but the finished product turned out great

arstechnica.com and hardocp.com are blogging sites which have reviews and forums. Hardocp's forums have a "hobbies" forum complete with a firearms section.

There is also sharkyextreme, which provides recommendations for building PC's and tracks memory and CPU prices. As do other sites.
