Cracked Compensator

i decided i needed to go practice last nite, i gathered gun, ammo mags everything i needed and went to the range.

about 20 rounds into practice, i look at the comp for some unknown reason. i discover a crack towards the end of the comp between the 4th port and the set of quads on the end..

kinda a wierd spot to crack...especially since gas pressure is so low out there.

i would be more upset if i wasnt getting a new open gun within the end of the week...

a new schuemann 4port hybrid and bedell ti comp will be next purchase...this time it will be a 9mm major

any pros and cons for the TI comp on a fullsize gun? or would it be better to go with a short 3 port steel comp?

Might want to talk to Bob, Dan, or some of the other reputable smiths on this forum about their take on TI comps. We played around with them some on the major 9s and had durability issues. Could have been the configuration we were using, but we ended up going back to the steel versions.

Two things...

1) My experience has been that cracks are more impact/vibration related that pressure related.... and often start as a result of a machining imperfection or metalurgy problem (in the case of a cracked comp)

2) A steel comp is less prone to cracking/failure that a Ti comp.

i think what started this was bullets striking the compensator baffles..

the more i think about it the more i want to just build a new top end.

I think the gun has had enough 180 power factor accurate number 7 loads through it to toast the barrel and i would hate to pour mega cash into a gun with unknown life left in the slide.

at least its not a race car with a 10K dollar blown engine.

Now, that would really hurt! :D

Although IMHO you are thinking in the right direction. Imagine dumping yourself because you got a crack in your "nuggin"? Heck, that gun served you well, and probably, (just like yourself) still has some good life/shooting left on it. Besides, you could sell it to a "needy" beginning shooter after refit. Or keep it as a spare?

adding the cost of barrel with comp (schuemann hybrd and decent comp)

vs a slide, barrel and comp(sti slide, KKM tube and same comp)

a difference of 75 dollars or so for the new slide and cheaper KKM barrel.

I think a new slide is gonna be the best way to go.
