RIP Vince Pinto

The Area 2 Director posted this on FB:

About a week ago former IPSC Secretary Vince Pinto posted this message:
"Folks, this is not a joke.
I've been in hospital for the last 5 days, due to a debilitating headache. After a series of tests, I've just been advised that I have a brain aneurysm.
We'll be discussing treatment options in the morning, but I've already been told that all surgical options have serious risks of stroke and/or death.
As I've already had two heart attacks over the past 5 years, this would be the trifecta. I really can't catch a break.
Anyway, I'm posting this preemptive farewell message now, in case I don't make it.
Thank you all for your friendship over the past 10 to 50 years. I've had a good 68 years on this rock, with few regrets.
God bless you all."
I just heard that a few days after posting this Vince passed away in hospital.
Vince was one of the leaders in the international shooting sports. You could ask him rules questions for hours and he would always have an answer. He had his critics, but his passion for shooting was never questioned. At one point he and I would talk weekly, as he was a huge source of information, and was larger than life.
My favorite thing about Vince was his love of cats.
Rest in peace buddy. I am sure you will be quoting rules to everyone wherever you are, but may you find peace in the afterlife.

As controversial Vince could be he was always a fountain of knowledge of the rules and the history of the sport.  I miss our 'spirited' discussions from time-to-time.  Nevertheless, on more than one occasion when the chips were down, he had my back.

Fairwell my friend.

Way back, in the early aughts, maybe until ~ 2007 or so, Vince graced us with his presence on the moderating team here.  He'd answer rules questions seemingly without ever getting tired, from the fairly obvious calls, to the more nuanced ones.  He had a more authoritarian streak than most of our team, and that led to some conflicts with both fellow moderators and members of the forum.

He could be gracious, and kind, and generous, and angry, and petulant, and helpful, and difficult, and hardworking, and supportive, and willing to share a fountain of knowledge, and real stubborn on the topic of IPSC vs. USPSA - but you also have to remember that he was looking at this game we love from a multinational perspective.  The sport may have been invented in the US - but the attendees at the Columbia conference were multinational, and the sport thrived outside the US too. And at the end of the day, he was human, like all of us with gifts, and talents, and faults, and foibles.

Vince and I last exchanged messages on a forum - here or the IPSC forum, I don't remember - probably 12-15 years ago.  I haven't thought of him in probably a decade.  Yet today, I'm oddly nostalgic for a time when it was possible to know virtually every member, and to read every post every day, and I'm grateful that Vince was our brother in this sport, on this forum, for a short while.

Rest in peace, may your bullets all find the A-zone, and your calls always be right, Vince!

Vince could be a bit abrasive at times but there's no doubting his dedication to the sport or the amount of knowledge and experience he had. Or his will to maintain direct contact with "the masses".
