First major match..

Recommended Posts

I decided to shoot LO for Texas Open this last weekend and made a big mistake. When going to Chrono I was unaware of the fact it isn't JUST chrono. It is a gear check in general.

I didn't want to unload my mags for them to use so instead of using what was on my belt I asked my cousin to grab an empty from my bag. He pulled a training 170 and I handed it over. Straight to Open, do not pass go, you are shooting the wrong caliber.

Funny enough I ended up placing higher in Open minor than I would've in Limited Optics.

Lesson learned but I was real mad for most of the day after that and it effected my shooting.

That's actually an interesting scenario.  I probably would have asked to speak to the MD about that one.  I feel like that would have been an easily explainable mistake.

Good rule of thumb is dont have anything in your range bag that you cant have or use during the match given the division you're shooting.

goes for ammo as well,  IE if you are shooting major dont have a box of minor ammo setting in your range bag.  Some matches actually make an effort to get random samples.

We had a long discussion with Troy years ago about going into shooter bags for ammo.  TLDR: they can't grab any old round rattling around your bag.  After all it could be a major load that'll blow up your Minor pistol.

That said, if you handed the mag to the chrono guy, that's on you.

I change my vote. I thought the cousin handed the mag to the chrono guy. If the op handed it to them, definitely on him 🤣🤣

Yep. It was on me. I did speak with the MD. It was my ignorance thus my fault. Was just sharing my first major blunder & match.

Don't sweat it too much, crap happens. You finished the match and learned a lesson that wasn't too costly, sounds like an overall win to me 👍🏻

eh that's a crap call to move you to open for a simple mistake.

hopefully you used the 170 to save a reload or two the rest of the match.

Brings up Another interesting point, I shoot Open exclusively so I have 170’s in my bag as well as 140’s. I have shot a few Majors where I only used the 140’s the entire match. What I hear chrono guys say typically is, “hand me the longest mag you use in the match”. Once I handed him a 140 and was told to grab a 170 instead. I get that people cheat with mags that are too long but it seems the wording should probably be, “hand me the longest mag legal for your division”?

At the World Shoot gear check you had to bring all your mags and they'd check them and put a little sticker on them if they passed.  Don't be caught using a mag with no sticker...  Doubt USPSA chrono people want to mess with that, so they just ask for the longest.

Every now an then I've seen matches spot-check mags on the stages.   Not all of them pass.
