Is there any other game in town than a Ruger 10/22 for this game ? Was also considering a S&W AR style..
Would mainly be for the wife but I like the idea of an adjustable stock..  So it would fit us both... However for the cost I could almost buy 2 traditional wood stocked ones..

I was using a 15-22 when I first started RFRO.  I was able to get the weight down with a Volquartsen CF barrel and a lightweight carbon fiber handguard.  I dropped in a good CMC trigger.  I also upgraded a number of parts from Tandemkross over the years.  I have since switched to a 10/22 but my 15-22 still runs great.  I had very few issues with it, I just wanted to go lighter.  (The pic is showing a Taccom stock and barrel. I have since sold those to a friend that is a rimfire GM using his customized 15-22).  If you are looking to get something for multiple people than the adjustable stock is a good idea.

Take a look at the Ruger 10/22 Take Down Lite. 4.5-pounds, take down feature makes for easy cleaning, and 2 different comb heights allow a degree of fitting to the shooter. It also has a threaded barrel, so a comp can be added to make sub-sonic loads be read by the timer. I went from Unclassified in Steel Challenge RFRO to A Class in just two matches with mine.

Edited to add... Ruger also has their BX drop-in 10/22 trigger (which I use) that runs at 2.75-pounds. It's sweet.

Thanks,,, Looks like they have a non takedown version with the same specs and combs but half the price.. Also it ships with about an inch shorter LOP than others,, Probably fit the wife better... I know I can get an AR style stock for it,, but they seem to have questionable reviews..
So now know what model to be on the lookout for

Did you need to do anything special to install this trigger?  I understand the 15-22 lower is wider than AR Lowers.  Does the trigger float at all or does that triggers stay in place?

CMC actually sells anti-walk trigger pins for the 15-22

If you go the 10/22 route, here's a very common stock upgrade which is adjustable: https://www.amazon.com/Axiom-Stock-10-22-Black/dp/B00CPXUZJQ

I started with a Blackhawk Axiom stock and didn't like it.  To jiggly.  I shoot with a bunch of people who  use 15-22s.  Just use CCI AR Tactical ammo (made specifically for that gun)  or MiniMags.

I ended up building my 10/22, because I wanted specific things (or though I did).  My suggestion is to take your wife to a steel challenge shoot.  Have her try different rifles and configurations.  Ask nicely and everyone will let her shoot a little through their rifle.  Bring some MiniMags and a some SV so you are not using up their ammo.  The only things remaining from my original custom build are the left charging receiver and bolt and the trigger group.  Everything else was swapped out at least once as I because aware of shortcomings.   For example:  I'm on my fourth stock.  This one is a keeper.  Second barrel.  Second red dot.  Third extractor.  Second guide rod.  Second V-block and screws.  Third set of mags.  These are keepers.

The good news is there is always someone willing to buy the stuff if you change your mind.  The only thing I have left is the Axiom stock, only because shipping it would be a pain.

It would seem that all the top end shooters are running a 10/22 variant. I would buy a used one and make it the way you want, you'll end there in the end anyway.

I have tried that approach in the past and it always seems to work out to be more expensive than buying what you want new.  I can see your approach working if it is for a 'trial' run.  If, after six months she knows what she wants, sell it and buy another.

OP, I'll tell you what makes one person happy is poison to another.  I'll stand by my recommendation to let her try several setups and decide what seems to work best for her.  I'll also tell you that if she has the typically female long neck, a guy's gun isn't going to work for her.  Or, it's going to hurt in a sensitive area.

Get a 1022 and put it in a Luth Stock. You'll have the best of all worlds.

So have the 6" slab sided to remove some of the weight.
