Recoil Spring for Tanfoglio Witness Match Elite 9mm

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty new to the Tanfo pistols and a little confused so please, bear with me.  I have a Tanfo Witness Match Elite 9mm and I'm trying to figure out what weight recoil spring I have from the factory.  I went on the Wolff site looking at recoil springs and a little confused with the Tanfo terminology for the sizes of their pistols.  I see recoil springs for Standard Size, Full Size, and Long Slide (LSP) models?  Just trying to make sure I order the right parts If I want to change the weight of my recoil spring or order a spare spring.

You have a full size pistol. Patriot Defense has a kit with different strength springs that are color coded. Factory is 14 pound. I can use between a 6lb and 8lb in my stock 2 9mm pistol. It will depend on the power factor of the ammunition that you’re using.

Thanks, I'll be running mainly factory ammo in this pistol 115, 124gr with a PF <150.  I was looking at the Wolff chart and thinking my Witness Elite Match was a long slide model and had a factory recoil spring of 10 lbs. so I was wrong there.  So it looks like Tanfoglio puts a factory spring of 14 lb. in all of these pistols whether they are chambered in 9mm or up to 10mm.

I know they are controversial, but anyone running shock buffers on their guide rods for the Tanfoglio?  I saw Henning's sells a brass shock buffer.

Running 9mm it is not needed, even P+. The Match Elite slide and frame holds up to the battering it receives from 10mm. These are 180Gr @1200ft/sec. Does sling the brass 50’ or so.

Crazy thing is they use the same recoil spring as 9mm.

No on the shock-buffs. If your going to shoot your match elite for a while patriot defense has a guide rod that “mates” up with the pocket in the frame. Cuts down on the beating that the old guide rod does.

The whole Wolf spring thing still confuses me. On Henning's sight there is an explanation that I'm still not sure I understand. I read it as all the Wolf springs are the same, but if you put the spring in a long slide (4.8") it rates at 2# less than what's on the package (which is what it would be in a 4.5# gun). If anyone here can clarify this more I'd appreciate it...

The long slide compresses the spring less,so the force generated by the spring is less.  The lbs/in rating could be the same, but the force generated goes up as the spring is compressed.  I have a Witness Hunter (6" barrel) in 10 mm and had custom springs (the stiffest that will fit) made to tame the ejection, and also bobbed the ejector.

I use polyurethane shock buffers because the slide still pounds the frame.  Henning sells the cone-fit guide rods for the compact and full-size models that reportedly work well, but it wasn't available for the long slide models like the Hunter when I was setting mine up.  There is a 6" version listed on his store site, but I have no idea which models it is compatible with.

A brass or copper shock buffer will be longer-lived than a polymer version, so I will probably change over when I run through my stash.
