midatlantic
Hi - A case separated during a match today in my TSO 40. But it split laterally, side to side. The bullet went out the barrel, and the slide ejected the bottom half. I couldn't figure out why no other rounds would fit until I got home under a bright light saw that the top third or so of the case was fire-formed against the inside of the chamber. How do I get that out? I can't push it out with a brass rod because the mouth head spaces against the chamber, leaving nothing for the pusher to push. At the breach end I can't think of a tool sharp enough and thin and strong enough to force between the brass case and the chamber. I need something that will withstand being wedged between the brass case and steel chamber, but because of the curvature of the chamber it has to be very sharp. Maybe a heavy duty canvas needle? All thoughts welcome. One thought is the temperature sensitivity of steel vs brass. Which shrinks more if I put it the freezer?
zzt
Punch a bullet into the rifling at the front of the chamber to seal it. Then clamp the barrel in a vertical position and fill the chamber with Kroil Oil. The Kroil will seep around the case in a couple of hours and the stuck brass should slide out with little effort. Take a small flat blade screw driver with sharp edges and dig an edge into the case while pulling it backwards. Remember to punch the bullet back out when you are finished. BTW, you can try freezing first. That might work too.
Ben53
You might also try running a bore brush part way in from the chamber end, then pull it back out, hopefully bringing the case back with it. I've seen that work. Good luck. PLEASE DO NOT try to pry between the chamber and the case.. you will likely ruin the chamber of the barrel and have to replace it. Worst case scenario, visit a gunsmith.
mveto
Get a tap and use it to crew in and pull out the left over brass ring. Had to do this on a PCC once. Not really sure what size a 40 cal would need. It only needs to thread in a few turns in order to grab onto the brass. For a 9mm case I used a 3/8-24 tap
midatlantic
Thanks for all the advice. I put it in the freezer for a few hours, then did the kroil oil thing recommended above. Let it sit for a few hours. Then I used a heavy duty needle, like for a sail or canvas, and carefully tapped it in between the case and chamber. Did it on two sides and then used forceps to easily remove it. thanks all for the advice.
Stuey
Bore brush has always worked for me. I keep one in my range bag in the event something like this happens.
assnolax
If it's really stuck you can plug the bore and pour in cerrosafe chamber casting alloy(melts under 200f) Then pound it out after 30 minutes.
obsessiveshooter
Using a hacksaw, cut the barrel carefully around the exterior of the chamber but don't cut all the way through. Once the steel is thin enough your should be able to snap it off cleanly and remove the brass ring by hand, undamaged.
NETim
I'm wondering if maybe a drywall anchor that expands out to grab the brass might work?
Racinready300ex
A brass bore brush should get it out. Try running it through from the muzzle end first and see if that gets it. Use a new one that's not worn out. If that doesn't get it out, try from the chamber end, put it in just enough to get to the end of the chamber and a little into the rifling the pull it back out. Reversing directions like that will be hard to get the brush back out but it should pull the brass out with it. I've had this happen once and this worked for me. That method worked like a charm for me when I had a case head separation in a .243 Win.
