motosapiens
my only experience is shooting a standard mk iv (heavy steel barrel) without a comp, and the vq scorpion with comp. I prefer the mkiv, and I shoot slightly faster with it, although both guns are nice. It might be instructive to try the lighter-barreled scorpion with no comp and see if a comp is useful on a lighter barreled gun. fwiw, I shoot alot of lim and SS in USPSA, so I grip my gun like a grown man. that may make a difference. I'm aware of the theoretical advantages of a lighter barrel, but after setting a PR with my limited gun (over a lb heavier than the SS gun I have traditionally shot), I stopped worrying about it and figured I should just learn to shoot faster and better. zzt
I've mentioned this before in another thread. With my custom CWA Upper and their original two-port comp I get appreciable muzzle rise with SV ammo. I get a little less with 1090, less again with 1150, only a tad with 1200 and none at all with 1235. Eley 42gr Force at 1250 drives the muzzle down. So now all I shoot are CCI 40gr Mini-Mags for RFPO.
BentAero
It's easy to tell if your comp is effective; spin it 180 degrees and point the top port toward earth. You'll know immediately if it works!

BentAero
Timely subject... The threads on my Striplin comp have slowly been disappearing for the past couple years, and due to operator error, I finally stripped them out. I'll be doing a little experimenting with Steve Foster's Falcon and Todd Syssa's Wiland Crusher compensator's over the coming weeks. The Crusher's OD was a bit large for my barrel, so I whacked it down to to the same size. First real test is tomorrow. slowhands
I run a Tandemkross comp on my 10/22, but only because the gun is so quiet with CCI standard velocity. I got tired of reshooting a good string because the timer missed my last shot. The gun is definitely louder, but I don’t perceive any difference with muzzle rise, which is already almost negligible. bigdawgbeav
If you are on FB, look for some of the pictures Trenton Mitsouka took this past weekend at the East Coast Steel Challenge Championship. Lots of great stuff that shows how much gas is coming out of rimfire comps...
Texaspaul
So if a gun fires and all the contact points are in aliened with the bore, would the gun have flip? I would assume the flip of a gun comes from the offset of the bore to the contact points of the shoulder and grip. The same reason some pistols have more flip is the grip to bore axis distance. I would assume the same reasoning with a rifle. The closer the bore is aliened to the the shoulder contact point the less flip you would have. So if you have a large bore to shoulder contact point variance the more flip you would have and hence the need for compensator to counteract the leverage created by the difference? Looks a whole lot better! Did you ever consider cutting some side slots on it so you could use a wrench to tighten it on the barrel? I'm currently using a Carolina Crusher comp on my RFRO and have trouble keeping it tight on the barrel... I tightened it as tight as I could by hand and used two drops of Loctite 243 (Blue)... It spun during my second match using it. Thinking about using more Loctite 243 when I put it back on... or maybe switching to Loctite 263 (Red). I use an o-ring and hand tighten all of my rimfire comps, works fine. I've never had one come loose during a match. Much easier to remove for cleaning as well. apoc4lypse
I use peel washers with my Carolina Crusher to keep it timed properly on my Black Mamba. I use the tab end of a Tipton Action/Chamber cleaning tool, inserted in the top slot, to torque it down. Shim until it's finger tight at the 10 o'clock position, then torque with the tool to 12 o'clock. It won't move until you want it to move.

You can vary the thickness and/or use two if needed for clocking. The o rings squish just enough to hold the comp in place. No need to have it banjo-string tight. MuayThaiJJ
I have two rimfire pistols with clamp-on compensators. CWA on a GSG 1911, it does feel a bit flatter than the stock slide. Volquartsen V-comp on a Ruger Mark IV, the Ruger is so damn heavy I think the comp doesn't do much, but it has a nice FO front sight. In summary, I think the smaller/lighter the pistol the more the comp will feel effective in rimfire

I Googled 'Tipton Action/Chamber cleaning tool' and found that Amazon sells a set for $11 with next day free shipping... Bought a set and they do indeed fit into the slot and provide great leverage for tightening the compensator... Works great... I would have never thought of that.
