bigboy69
For 38super I used to use small rifle primers, but for 9 major i just use spp
chgofirefighter
Zero issues using SPP....
BritinUSA
Back in the days of 175PF, small pistol primers would only work with enlarged/longer firing pins. SPP should be fine now it’s lower but if you use a very light bullet and fast burning powders then I think you may get some issues.
Jschreiber
I've been running spp from the gitgo...zero issues
APL-G35
I ran SPP all year in my 9 major gun and zero issues
Posvar
I still use CCI SPP with no issues.

I run small pistol, small rife, and the magnum versions of each interchangeably. I have run thousands of rounds each without any issue whatsoever.. The magnum versions run about 10 ft/sec higher muzzle velocity and others have said 15 ft/sec. Don't think so much. Shoot
Skeeter44
Obviously depends on gun setup but in my 2011’s I have had success running everything from SP to SR mag’s with no issues. Changes velocity slightly obviously but haven’t had issues with the guns lighting em off.
dogtired
I have recently started loading 9 major and am using magnum SPP without problems. They seem to be slightly easier to find than non- mag.

Due to primer shortage what is everyone's opinion on using small pistol primers? I always preferred Magnum small pistol primers for .38SC and 9major. rishii
I friend had a svi opengun and he told me, svi recommends sp primers which kinda blew my mind. when I thought about it, PF used to be 175 for major and I used to load my 38SC to 180, and primers would flatten, crater, and blow the dimple back out, so rifle primers made sense after that I started used spm with no problem, until this latest primer famine, now I use what I can find
chgofirefighter
I've always used SPP, CCI never had ANY issues. Lots of misingformation out there on the internet... Both in Minor and Major loads.
Blueknight749
I shot two Akai Custom Open Guns with Winchester and Federal small pistol. Although I had no issues, I was told by the gun builder that I should use Small rifle, so I switched to CCI SRPs without any issues.
FTP_Shooting_Sports
SPP, SRP all work fine. The only one I would recommend to stay away from are Federal SPP. They are really soft and primer flow too easily. Never had a problem with any other brand.
shred
Two possible bad things that can happen-- primer flow into bad places or gas leakage around the primer before it seals eroding the breechface. SPP is better at one and SRP the other.
bustopher4
I prefer SRP but have ran both with almost no difference in power factor or performance. I have heard of breach faces being scorched in the past but did not experience it myself.
MaX_1
CCI and Federal SPP, no problem in 9mm Major.
dwbethue
I have been running Fed 205s SRPs for 9mm major without issue and I also tried some CCI 550 small pistol magnum primers, which seemed to work as well. As some others have said, I think any and all will work. I was recommended to start with SRP because they are rater for higher pressures. I've never used SPP in my major loads, but most the people I shoot with do without issue. Like others have mentioned I have not had luck with the small rifle magnum primers, they just didn't go off reliably enough for me. Even in a Glock with a full weight striker spring I was getting about 5%-10% that wouldn't go bang.
sharko
I've used Federal SP Match primers which are probably one of the softest primers without issue.
clw42
SPP, SRP, SPM, SRM - whatever I can get my hands on, they all go bang in my open guns and I have seen zero deleterious consequences.
OpenshooterMclass4lyfe
I’ve been using federal small pistol magnums for almost 2 years now between 3 different open guns. Never had any issues.

Bakerjd
I have used all small primers. Federal to ginex. But I run my 9 major ammo at about 178pf. No issues ive foud. Even when doing some load development and had one load going about 1480FPS. I will say at that load the gun was damn flat shooting. But a little too hot for me to be cool with it.
