An AR with a 16" barrel in 5.56 is very difficult to beat for HD purposes.  

 

Back in the days when Mike Horne and Mike Harries were testing ideas for Gunsite (they were both instructors) we did a lot of things including shooting in a fun house. Go to Gunsite now and you'll still see their stuff being taught. Indoors you can't beat a pistol, especially in tight spots. I brought up the LASD SEB Team commander to try it with us (he brought an MP-5) and he did change some of the tactics they were using for indoors

@ltdmstr brought up a good point about shooting inside of any house or small room.  During a home invasion you will have zero hearing protection, for this reason I will be looking into building a suppressed 300 Blackout SBR for a home defense gun.  

FWIW Blackout subsonic punches IIIa armor with ease.
