David.Hylton
Bullet set back is no joke. I found this example when I was picking up brass at a local range. I haven't heard of anyone having a ka-boom. Edited March 21, 2020 by David.Hylton
Intheshaw1
I'm thinking that was stepped on and tore open by the looks of how the brass is bent inwards.
Hi-Power Jack
I wonder why the bullet is still in the case ?
4n2t0
Bullet setback IS mostly a joke. Does it happen? Yes. Can it affect function? Yes. Will it cause a "kaboom"? No likely. https://dailycaller.com/2013/03/05/battered-bullets-does-bullet-setback-matter/ The pictures no longer load properly but I found some of the originals online. I have read or Been Told, 357 Sig notorious for this. And that it was because of the very short neck case mouth Edited March 21, 2020 by usmc1974
zzt
You have to be very careful of setback in a 9mm PCC, because the case is not fully supported. I had a couple of brass blowouts. Not fun. In a fully supported chamber, setback will increase pressure, velocity and recoil. I've never had a case separation in any of my 9mm Open guns. I've never had a Kaboom, but I've read here many times that .40 Major is prone to Kabooms using fast powders and heavy bullets, if setback occurs. I had three - at least two were WW cases, in a TruBor, using WAC powder. All within a few weeks of one another - none before and none since ??? Glockster1
That's probably not what you think it is. The bullet was pushed in too far probably from someone trying to clear it and smashed the bolt or slide into it lengthwise. When the round was fired the resulting compressed powder charge caused the casing to blow out.
ExStreetWalker
It looks like a piece of brass hit by a lawnmower blade.

Joedirt199
Unless it was one of those flip and catch tricks where the round fell back into the slide sideways and jammed the bullet in the shell while something pointy hit the primer. You guys know that urban legend?

I see millions and millions of pieces of brass that come off LE ranges every year, and that is a textbook lawnmower hit.
