Agreed, the quality of competitors went up in my area as well.

Haven't shot a single round in 8 months, and have not touched the gun since then. When the ammo prices are down, I will start practicing and shooting matches.

 

I could have dry fired and maintained my skill level to a degree, but without live fire training there is no point in doing that either

I'm not really sure about ammo prices because I reload. Primers are available in the $80/k range you just have to keep your eye out for them. If you're holding out for it to drop from there it may never happen.

Everyone else got much better while I only got slightly better
