Arakisk
I'm just getting into reloading, still buying most of the equipment. 9mm is what I will be focusing on, and I'm looking for a few loads to start off with. The OAL requirement is because of my plans to use the same components for use in my G34 and my PCC. Any help would be appreciated. MemphisMechanic
Is your PCC compensated? If so, restrict yourself to plated or JHP bullets unless you do not mind grinding cement-like lead deposits out of it’s ports regularly. Ask me how I know. Also, your OAL is going to be determined by the contour of the bullet you choose. The same (short) chamber might take a certain 124gr fmj out to 1.150+ and yet fail to feed a round nosed 124gr any longer than 1.110” Edited March 19, 2020 by MemphisMechanic
phoenixsomd
I have had luck with this load: Xtreme 115 RN, 3.8gr e3, Winchester SPP, loaded to 1.125. Run it out of my SP-01 and PCC (Taccom 5.35" ULW barrel)
zzt
So far my fav load is 3.6gr e3 under a 124 with CCI 500 ! 1.135". I've gone as low as 1.125" with no apparent change. I can also load to 1.500" and they (FMJ profile, plated) also run in my PCC. I also like Sport Pistol but have to go to 4.2gr to equal the e3. Thank you for posting this, it explains why my reloads work in my CZ 75 Tactical Sport and MBX PCC. Basically I copied what Winchester White Box. I need to buy a SAMMI case gauge. Chopaka
I did a plunk test on my CZ 75 TS bbl, the xtreme 124 gr RN's pass at 1.15 in my pistol's barrel.Like I have said already, I got lucky that the ogie of the xtreme 124 gr RN's are "close" to that of the Winchester White box 124 gr ammo.Sent from my SM-T380 using Tapatalk
MemphisMechanic
@Chopaka a case gauge Will not help you. EVERY single time you change bullets, you need to load dummy rounds with them. Conduct a plunk and spin test with the barrel of all guns you plan to shoot it through. (If it doesn’t plunk in effortlessly, spin in the chamber freely, and fall out when flipped over? It’s too long. That is what “plunk and spin” means.) Shorten your dummy rounds up until they clear. It isn’t uncommon for a gun like a 9mm CZ-75 to take a certain 125 jacketed at 1.140” but need you to load a coated or hollowpoint 124gr as short as 1.080”. The charts above explain why. As you noticed. My approach was lazier. I’ve cut the throat of all of my 9mm guns to take even the most troublesome bullets out to 1.150”. I know I can load long without doing any checking. Chopaka
Plunk AND spin. Yup that is what I did. I have 3,000 Berry's 124 gr flat nose bullets I will be switching over to when these 124 gr RN's are gone.I will be plunkin', spinin', and dumpin' when that time comes. Thank you for bringing up this subject, much appreciated. Sent from my SM-J737T using Tapatalk

Well done H Agreed - it drives me crazy having to load short for my M&P 2.0's vs my Dan Wesson 1911's, so have been searching for a better 124/125g range fodder bullet - may switch to some sort of truncated point with a JHP-like profile
Cuz
Isn’t the plunk & spin only to see how long you can go? If you’re trying to shorten your load and want to focus on an OAL of say 1.125-1.130 or so you “shouldn’t “ have to plunk test in everything. Otherwise wouldn’t commercial ammo manufacturers have to do it?Am I missing something here? Thanks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

MemphisMechanic
@kneelingatlas absolutely not! Someone off of a cz forum created it and posted it here. I wish I could remember who. I’d edit the photo with their username to credit it.
Jim Watson
Plunk AND chronograph. I went to order some Bayou 124 coated and saw a short nose no-lube-groove pattern instead of the long nose with shoulder and groove I had been getting. I inquired. Denny said the mold maker said the NLG was more accurate so he bought a set of molds to replace his beat up grooved molds. He said he loaded and Ransom Rested some and they were indeed more accurate. My Colt 1991A1 IDPA ESP has the shortest throat of guns I shoot regularly and I had to seat the new style bullets to a substantially shorter OAL. I figured that would call for a lighter powder charge so I chronographed a downward ladder. Nope, I am going to have to increase my load. I will measure seating depth vs OAL. If you know that the current OAL works in all your firearms then shortening to a different OAL won't matter (aside from potential feeding issues). But how does one know what length to start with? Plunk and spin, that's how. Commercial manufacturer load to a length they know will work for the vast majority of firearms. They usually choose bullets with forgiving ogives. e.g. My CZ has the shortest leade, so I load all my ammo to 1.085" (with my bullet of choice), that way the rounds will work in all my firearms. That's what I did, except I went to 1.165" with 115 HAPS. I shoot major, so I needed the room. At $10 per barrel, I can't understand why anyone lives with a too short freebore/leade/throat. It doesn't make sense. The only way I would settle for 1.125" is if my mags demanded it.

Ummmm, because some of us don't need the room... I don't shoot major and I'm completely comfortable shortening my OAL to whatever length necessary.
