New from NJ

Hey everyone, been lurking here a while and decided to go ahead and make an account/introduce myself.

I'm a recently separated Green Beret veteran and just moved back to my home state of NJ to continue school and be closer to family. It's definitely a bummer here as far as gun laws go, but it is what it is.

I've never been a part of sport or competitive shooting communities; had plenty of buddies who were while I was in the service, but just never really the time myself. Now that I'm out and have more free time, I'm looking to check out the local USPSA and IDPA scene.

Currently own and shoot a single stack Dan Wesson 1911, will be looking to pickup a JP GMR-15 to shoot for fun & PCC division.

I'm moreso looking to have fun and use matches as a way to maintain/improve my shooting skills than get into competition shooting in a very serious way. Anyhow, looking forward to checking out the local matches, any NJ members on here?

Cheers,
J

Welcome.    I live in CT now, but grew up in north NJ.   For sport shooting, NJ is actually not bad other than magazine restrictions.

I often attend events at Old Bridge Rifle and pistol club.    There are USPSA / Steel challenge /  Knockdown Steel   all offered here:   http://steelscoring.com/#/events

Many of my buddies were there today from NY shooting the knockdown steel.  Good shooters in NJ for sure.

Depending where in NJ don't rule out PA matches either.   Get familiar with   practiscore.com and search for clubs / matches;

Good Luck !

@jrdoran & @waktasz, do either of you find that there are bullet-type or velocity restrictions with regard to shooting steel in NJ/PA/CT area matches/clubs? I've decided to shoot Open in USPSA and will subsequently be working on load development for 9mm Major. Definitely looking to shoot SC as well, as a way to get more trigger time and just shoot more in general. Although SC doesn't have PF requirements, I'd prefer to just shoot the same 9mm major load in SC for the sake of getting intimately familiar with the one load. Plan on using PD JHP's in either 115gr or 124gr loaded to major PF, was wondering if that would be an issue at certain SC matches?

I run my open gun with full USPSA loads for our steel match at Old Bridge. Best way to learn the gun. Just remind the RO so they are prepared before you shoot. [emoji12]

I much prefer 115gn bullets in open.

Good to know, thanks! Do you know if they have an issue with JHP's being used? I'm from East Brunswick originally and plan on checking things out at Old Bridge once the virus situation settles down.

Welcome. I shoot matches at CJRPC. I’ve never heard of any restriction on bullet types for steel challenge or knockdown matches. Once things open up again come down and shoot the public matches at Central Jersey.

Cheers, thanks! I definitely plan on making the rounds and checking out as many clubs and matches as I can once things are back to normal. Slowly amassing reloading components for the time being... 😆

I grew up in Midland Park in NW Bergen County.   You should check out black rock.  Easy drive up by Harriman.  First class steel challenge club.

There are several from NJ who come.

https://practiscore.com/clubs/black-rock-shooting-sports

USPSA at Dutchess

and Old Bridge

Feel free to email or PM me with any questions.  Sorry for the delay.  Somehow the forums dropped my 'follow' setting.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. Looking forward to checking out some of these matches, still working on setting up my reloading station and acquiring an open gun for the time being while the pandemic plays out.

Get a .22 pistol or rifle and come do steel challenge when things open up again !     You'll learn a few things about what works and what doesn't on all divisions and may even stumble on someone's used deals.
