Best PCC barrel length

Here at TACCOM....we've found that a 5.25" has such a fast impulse that a brake really does not show any improvement on dot bounce and Getting the recoil system set does more than a brake does for felt recoil.....and to that end, we've kept with that length barrel for the 16" UWL barrels.

We've since come out with a 1016 barrel and a 1316 barrel......10" and 13" respectively with pinned and welded brakes to make them 16" legal. It appears that the optimal length for the brake to work for least amount of dot bounce is in that range.....giving the nod to the 10" length. The problem with a 10" barrel/brake is hand guard length. We've been able to fashion our Carbon Fiber Hand guard to 11", but some like it longer than that. The 1316 barrel allows for a 13" carbon fiber hand guard, which is only 1" shorter than our standard 14" hand guard.

Overall.....both of the new barrels have been able to use the gas much more efficiently than a 16" or even our older 14.5" barrels that we've had in the past.

If you look up '9mm by the inch'......you will see that velocity loss in a 10" or 13" barrel is insignicant. And to be honest, there really isn't much lost in a 5.25" barrel either....like maybe 100fps and that for the most part is the same hold over at just about any distance out to 100yds.

Have you tried 816 or 616? I can cut mine to 5 inches but I want a longer handguard and will make a shroud past the handguard. But is better with 8 inch and 4 inch comp and 9 inch handguard? Some say 10 inch is best for a comp, but why not anything from 6 to 10? I don't need 16, just want is past a 9-10 inch handguard for safety. A 6 inch barrel and a 6 inch comp would that. But would it be better with an 1014 type?

yep.....we pretty much settled on 1016 as being optimal.....1316 being on the extreme end of it. We pretty much only deal with 16" barrels, but don't be surprised if we offer a 10" or 13" solid barrel in the near future

Thanks for your reply. But I don't get it, why is a 10 inch better then an 8 inch recoil wise. I understand that it's hard to notice any difference but I can't help my curiosity. The muzzle velocity is pretty much the same, but a little little less dwell time with the 8 inch.

It depends on what you want to run out of it - the best part of a 6" ish range barrel is that you can use your other minor loads, i.e. for production or Carry Optics without changing load data.  I had a 5.5" with pinned and weilded shroud by TACCOM 3G which worked fairly well, but in retrospect, I would get something longer around 8".  One thing to think about as well is balance - with a full 16" or 14.5" plus yyyuge comp, the rifle is obviously front heavy.  8 + shroud seems to be the sweet spot for balance as well.
