Need spring help for steel loads for lim/major gun

Recommended Posts

This is my first year I’m shooting a steel match and I usually shoot USPSA. I’m going to use my limited gun that has a 11 pound spring for 180 grain major loads.

What bullet and spring weight do I use?  I want maximum reliability. I’ll trade “flat” for reliability while still being competitive.

If the gun has any slide lightening it will change things. Might be a good idea to get 7,8,9 lb springs and try them out. They’re not expensive.

You have two options. 1. Load your 180 grain bullets down to about 140PF, same OAL. 2. Pick a 140-150 grain bullet of similar profile at the same OAL and try the same powder charge as your major load. It will probably be close to the PF you want. Either may function with an 11lb spring. Some 9mm 1911s come with an 11lb spring from the factory. If not, try a 9 or 10lb spring and you should be good.

I run 200 Bayou's in my major load and 140 Bayou's with the same powder and settings on the press, just change the bullet.

The guns I've built, Bedell and Akai limited guns all run both loads with the same spring set up. FWIW
