The city actually isn't that bad except I had to leave all my guns in Georgia. I was planning on brining a few up and shooting matches again but I can't even decipher the laws and even cops can't give me consistent answers... 1) Ok so I understand that I'm basically shafted on owning any sort of gun legally within the city. Does anyone know if there's a USPSA-focused range that will allow some sort of storage for a pistol or two? 2) I'm getting told by some people that my normal mags are good to bring up... I just can't load more than 10 rounds. But that sounds... retarded but if it's true it'd be very convenient. Is that correct? 3) I live on manhattan if anyone has any recommendations for where to go, maybe some people to talk to, cause I think part of the issue is I'm surrounded by people that have no idea what they're talking about when it comes to this stuff. 4) What's the most competitive division in NY? You might want to travel a little bit, out to PA - your GA gear is all good in PA There used to be USPSA matches near Poughkeepsie (Dutchess County Pistol Assoc) - not sure what they're doing now. You might want to move across the river to NJ - not too much better, but better than NYC - that's about as bad as it gets And, it's not a bad commute. Is your school uptown or downtown ? Uptown, you take the GWB, and downtown the Lincoln Tunnel. During non-rush hour traffic, neither is bad. I've unfortunately accepted that the only legal way I'll get to shoot matches is to store my gun outside of the city, which sucks... but it is what it is. I'll be here for four years so it's either that or no shooting at all. Hoping to work out something with LIPSA where they can let me store a gun/mags there. We shall see. They are not cheap as far as regular membership but they run monthly USPSA indoor matches at the usual $20 or 25 rate. Ask to talk to Gian - he is the MD/RM for the matches there and if you need to store something at an FFL rather than a "friend's house" - that might be your best option, IDK, but you can always ask them. Several NYPD Shooting Team members come there fairly often, some of them travel to Majors and compete at a high level. - LIPSA is definitely a good choice - they put on some good matches from what i've heard and seen in their stage diagrams. https://www.practiscore.com/clubs/long-island-practical-shooters-association. it can be a hellish drive to/from Long Island, just be ready In NJ Shongum https://www.practiscore.com/clubs/shongum-practical-shooters Old Bridge - i heard a lot of good things, never been but am planning to visit them next season. You have to go to their site: http://www.OBCATS.com The ones above (except of LIPSA and Old Bridge, i think) are all local club matches with mostly "stand and shoot" or "shoot 4-move-shoot 4" type of stages. Not super challenging. if you want to shoot an L1 match that feels like a Major, you'll need to go to PA. There are plenty of Bs and a few A and M class shooters in these divisions. All other divisions are not very competitive in this area. All divisions in limited states shoot to state imposed limit - so 10 rounds max for all division in NY and NJ. IMO, if you are limited to 10 rounders - the choice is easy: Production. NY police officers and certain peace officers are absolutely allowed to carry in NYC. When you retire only police officers can get NYC carry permits. Sorry, when I said NY cops cannot carry in the city, I meant NY cops who are NOT NYC cops. My son-in-law is a Lt with local, upstate police force and he cannot carry concealed in NYC. L3324temp Posted October 28, 2019 Share Posted October 28, 2019 For item #1 if you live in the city, you must have a NYC permit to posses a handgun in NYS. So you need to follow the process to get a NYC possession permit. With a hunting endorsement I believe you can take it outside the 5 Burroughs but be sure to research that. LIPSA is outside the 5 Burroughs. If you try to buy a PCC outside of NYC with a NYC drivers license/address in NY you are going to strike out even if you plan to store it outside NYC. And if you carry outside of 8-6 - you're a criminal. It's absolutely idiotic. One of the key criteria is that you carry large sums of money (or valuables in case of jewelers) for your business needs. The other is who you know - NYC is a giant cesspool of corruption. In case you dont recall a fairly recent case of NYPD corruption where the approving officers were signing permits for $6K a pop. No place I know of in NY will let you store your pistol there whether its a range or FFL. You will need a pistol permit. If you plan to stay for a while, apply now! 2. Pretty sure you cannot possess any high cap mags (over 10 rounds) in NY state unless you're traveling through or you are LE. 3. As I mentioned I go to LIPSA. Great guys there. I haven't been anywhere else but you can search USPSA site for affiliated ranges. Get to know locals and maybe you can eventually carpool with other competitors. 4. They all seem pretty damn competitive to me but no matter what division you're in, max limit is 10 rds because this state sucks. Doing well in school should be your first priority but if USPSA withdrawal is going to be difficult to swallow, transfer schools. There is not going to be any solution that will even come close to what you potentially had in Georgia. As a student, the last thing you need to worry about is permits and car rentals and negotiating the logistics of the bureaucracy. Your hobby should not consume that much mental energy.
