M&P 9 Pro mag release spring

Bench

Recommended Posts

For competition I'm looking to swap out the mag release spring for a lighter one. I appears that the factory spring is glued in and my first thought is to use heat to soften the glue...but since working inside the plastic frame a flame heat source isn't feasible. Any other suggestions ie. solvents that won't affect the frame?

I don't know that this will help, as the info I saw was 10 years ago and specs may have changed...but at one time, some folks on another forum were replacing their springs with .063 music wire to make the springs STIFFER.  To do that, they pressed the spring out, top to bottom, and drilled it with a 1/16th bit.  No glue was mentioned, they were describing them as "press fit."  There was some discussion about how the flexibility of the grip, the varying distance (tolerance? variance?) between catch and mag contributed to the way the whole thing worked as far as the mags being released too easily.  Maybe you could reduce the engagement of the mag catch by removing a bit of material (cheap part, no messing with frame) and improve it to your liking.

Thanks!!! I looked down inside to the release area and saw that only with a FULL press of the release would the catch 'disengage'. I did file off a little of the catch so that when the release was pressed the catch was more parallel with the surrounding mag housing. It still needs a strong push on the release button just not as long and hard as previously. That certainly helped as well as a bit of dry silicon spray in the mag well so mags slide out easier (we'll see if that was a good idea or not).

After smoothing out the engagement surfaces on my 2 M&Ps I noticed smoother and easier capture of mags during a reload,  not what you are attempting to accomplish but a welcome side effect.
