9mm 1911 SS mags

Recommended Posts

A couple of tweaks I did to my Brownells  mags

on the front “feed lips” of the mag I noticed the inside edge was sharp so I polished it smooth

also my mags wouldn’t drop free, which I figured out was the same feed lips protruding out slightly past the mag body, a few light taps with a plastic hammer solved it

I went through a bunch of mags and had problems with all of them.  It turns out that none of them like long loaded ammo.  I was loading to 1.161" for my 2011 and wanted to use the same ammo in the 1911.  I tried taking the spacer out of the Brownell's mag, but it still did not work.  The follower is shorter, because it was designed for the spacer, and the rounds don't always settle against the rear of the mag.  I stuck in some Everglades reman ammo loaded to 1.145" and they worked fine.  So I'll load shorter for the 1911.

Tripp mags work well for me, except for one problem - when I try to remove a partally-loaded magazine.  The top of the Tripp mags allow the top round to move forward just enough to hang up when you try to remove the magazine.  The mag either hangs up altogether, or drops the top round out as I remove the magazine.  Sometimes it hangs up until I use enough force to remove the mag anyway, and THEN it drops the top round out.

Mostly this is just an issue at "If finished, unload and show clear", but it is enough of a problem for me that I don't want any more Tripp 9mm 1911 mags.

I don't have that problem with either Wilson or Dawson mags...

I have the exact same issue with Tripp 9mm mags. The Dawson's work great, I'm curious to see if the Brownell's mags work as well as the Dawson's since they both seem to use Metalform tubes.

I used to use Dawson mags.  Now I buy all Brownells mags.  They work just as well for nearly half the cost.

Yeah.  It's close.  If anything jars the mag and moves a round forward it sticks.  It works just fine in 2011 mags, but the spacer they put in the 1911 mags causes a problem.  This pistol is a dedicated 1911 Open gun for SCSA.  It is identical to my 2011 Open gun, except for single stack.  I was hoping to use the same minor ammo in both.  If that doesn't work out I'll load shorter for the 1911.

Nobody using 38 Super mags and long loaded 9mm ammo ? Seemed to be pretty common decade ago, always what I have used.

Are the followers and springs in the Brownells mags the same as the Dawson?

I haven't taken them apart side by side and compared, but I do believe they're the same. It looks like the only difference is the basepad and finish. They function identically to the Dawson mags for me.

Still using metal form 38 super mags 10 round. Load, seat and feed with no issues.

Found out the hard way on Saturday that 1.17 will run, not 100% without getting stuck in the mag occasionally. Dawson and Wilson ETM run great in my Springfield. Had to bump my OAL down to 1.15 from 1.17.

They are the same.(metalform)  Follower, spacer and spring are identical.  I have both but prefer the Dawson over the Brownells.  I don't like the coating on the Brownells.  I am using them in a Range Officer, a RIA, and a Dan Wesson Pointman.  Tripps don't work for me, they nose dive.

10 rounders, who makes the best

These guns can be finicky !

Sadly, I can confirm that truer words were never spoken. It may well come down to your particular gun. My Trojan will not run reliably with any of the available 10-round magazines despite a trip back to STI, trying all of the mag catches on the market and different main and recoil springs. I have had to revert to using the Springfield Metalform 9-round mags for reliable feeding. Others with the same gun have reported success with various 10-round mags, but I'll reiterate that it may well come down to what your particular guns likes. I'd suggest borrowing as many different magazines as you can muster and try them in your gun with the load that works the best for you.

I have some of the first production run of Metalform 10x9s.  They worked fine for a while, then got spotty.  Springs did not help.  Discarding the spacer and installing Super springs and followers worked pretty well.  I don't see any complaints about the current crop whether under Brownell or Dawson brand.

Tripps feed well, but as said are prone to stripping a round on a speed load or even coming out of the carrier.

CMC XPs are the best I have found but are no longer made under Wilson ownership.

I have one of the replacement Range Pro magazines and it is doing well.

The Wilson ETM Gen 0 and Gen 1 seem gun specific, good in one pistol, not the other.

I have one ETM Gen 2 that is doing well in both.

Nine round magazines are a lot less finicky, whether 1950 rear spacer or Metalform/Leatham/Springfield front ramp.

A Metalform 38 magazine with their round follower is a fine 9mm magazine.  In MY guns.

Just ran 8ea stainless Metalform 10rd 9mm mags in MY Springfield RO and only had one issue with a round hitting the feed ramp causing a stoppage out of 100rds.  This was using a Ed Brown extended mag release if that makes a difference.  Only thing bad I could say about them was that I was blinded a few times as it was sunny outside...
